what p90 guitar and which amp to go with

An SG with P90s. The newer, economy models have a fatter neck, and the older models and reissues usually have the slimmer, more flexible neck. Much, much lighter than a Paul. SGs are very different animals if you're not used to one, but for me there's nothing better than that flat slab of mahogany for some squawkin' rockin. Either that, or a Junior. As for amps, I'm not too familiar with lower-wattage stuff, but my friend's Vox Night Train rocks pretty hard. He plays in a three-piece rock band (guitar, bass, drums), and every time I've seen them play in small to mid-sized bars, it cuts through the mix just fine.

I own quite a few P-90 guitars, but possibly my fave is this one:

I have several LPs with P-90s but I prefer the spankier tone of this SG. I also have a very similar designed SG Classic (the MF exclusive) but this one is more resonant. It's an SG Special 60s tribute.

For an amp I would recommend either the '68 Custom Princeton or the '68 Fender Deluxe Reverb RI. Both of those amps are good at Fender tones but better at over driven tones than their black face cousins.

The other P-90 guitar that I have that stands out for me is my rather new 2013 Gibson Les Paul Tribute to Les Paul. Maybe it's its trapeze bridge, but for whatever reason, it has more vibe than most of my P-90 guitars. But that SG above has a higher comfort level for me.

Happy hunting!

yeah its probably gonna be an SG. My last SG had minihumbukcers in it, and that through my tweed deluxe was mean.

^^^^ That's a very cool SG! :philthumb:

When it comes to P90's, I'm partial to my Casino. Run that into my AC15, and it's a match made in heaven. It also works great into a Princeton. SGs and Les Paul Specials are also good choices if you're after something with P90s in it.

i really want a vox ac10! actally I REALLY want an ac30, but those are stupid loud. and the ac15 is not much less louder.

the amp should be 2X10 with either el84 or 6v6 power tubes

and it should a combo. But im not that picky.

and not weigh 80lbs.

I have a SG Classic with P90's and run it through several different amps, depending on the tones I want.

It sound very nice through my D Z Maz 18 1x12 combo.

The make the Maz 18 in a 2x10 also, so it may workie.

I also like it with a 5 watt Gibson Goldtone amp I have or a Fender DRRI, sound good through my Marshall JCM 800 combo, but everything sounds good through that amp.

I had one of those newer Vox AC 15, imo the Vox company is basically a name, and not much like to old Vox amps.

Even Jeff Tweedy of Wilco who love old Vox amps was using Mogan amps for a while. The other guitar player/ keyboard guy Pat, uses a Reeves.

You can get a lot of mileage out a Princeton reverb.

I got an AC10 and I like it. Took me a while to decide for sure, but I like it. I think its OD tone also mellowed for me after just a bit of break-in time. It's got a beefy tone for a 1 x 10.

I just took it to jam with some of my old band mates a couple nights ago and it had a nice full tone in the room.

My next gear purchase is going to be the new run of the Fender '57 Custom Deluxe. It will be dropping a bit of coin fer sher, but I really don't have anything quite of the caliber (i.e hand-wired) but it's also more in the ball park of where my tonal interests are running these days.
