I remember this one from the mid 60s. I think it was my first 45

I guess it's a combination of Doo Wop and rock and roll with surf music influences

I could go on, but I'll leave some of the other obvious zanies for others to post. ;)

"Everyone's Gone to the Movies" by Steely Dan, a bouncy, Caribbean-inflected little groove, with words about the jolly neighborhood pedophile and his nefarious plans for the kiddies.

Kids if you want some fun

Mr. LaPage is your man

He's always laughing, having fun

Showing his films in the den

Come on, come on

Soon you will be eighteen

I think you know what I mean

Don't tell your mama

Your daddy or mama

They'll never know where you been

CHORUS:

Everyone's gone to the movies

Now we're alone at last

Listen to what I say

He wants to show you the way

Right down the hallway with open arms

To teach you a new game to play

Come on, come on

Soon it will be too late

Bobbing for apples can wait

We know you're used to sixteen or more

Sorry we only have eight

CHORUS

Kids if you want some fun

See what you never have seen

Take off your cheaters and sit right down

Start the projection machine

CHORUS

Now that's quirky, y'all.

I think the "oldest" song I can remember digging was this one:

my first album was The Beach Boys Endless Summer. it was a greatest hits CD my dad's friend got for me when I was about 5 or 6

I think it's an interesting tune and also one of my personal faves of theirs. I often think it's a bit funny that it is often show-cased as a '60s psychedelia song, since it was fairly tame compared to songs like "White Rabbit", but it is definitely noteworthy for its popularity AND use of a tannerin. Perfect segue for me to add this one.

I like funny, quirky, zaney as much as the next cat. Hell probably even more. Just look at me I'm a cat that looks like a clown. But that is no reason the music itself can't be badass.

I got two words for you.

Jerry Reed.

Natural born ham.

Natural born great musical talent.

I write this as I'm sitting here watching Water boy.

We didn't have much guitar music in the house when I was little. The Ventures Walk, Don't Run and a couple Sandy Nelson albums.

Pretty sure this was the first song I ever learned by ear... on my Teisco with two strings.
