Hi all...

My first post...a bit therapeutic smile.gif

So many amazingly talented people here...I should say, I am not a professional musician...Just someone who loves music more than anything....singing, playing, songwriting...It is what makes me human...

But, I am unpolished and only recently began to play live...I am horribly shy and get lost in moments...Make mistakes, etc...But, I figure I need to start to overcome this, and this is another step along the way...

This is at an open mic run by a friend...We had a talent show at a startup we worked at, thought it was something special, and parlayed it into something more regular...Found a nice spot owned by an amazingly kind photographer...

This is an original song...Lots of mistakes, but here we go.

I'm on the left with the hair and the pink ibanez.

me singing. And a bend I'm the solo that kills me every time I hear it. During the gig, you are onto the next song. When it's on video aaaaaaaaaa it's there every time!!!

This is the song we always ended with. And yeah, I don't know what the big deal was with the guitar player hating it. LoL

I'm not a prick. I have lots of friends. It's just frustrating on these forums trying to connect with people because not too many are on my vibe. Most are Cover dudes and ya know, I've been there and done that and it gets old going round and round. I've been interacting on a regular basis on these forums for almost 12 years and there WERE a lot of guys who got it back in the day but most were old timers who've since moved on. I'm getting the sense that it's time for me to move on as well. Such is life...

We play Jewish weddings every so often (did one just last week) and, of course, they ask if we can play "Hava Nagila" for the The Hora. Normally, we take a shot at just about anything, but I always insist we'll just give them that one on iPod because we don't have the instrumentation or style to do it justice and some stuff just should not be done lamely, IMO.

I love traditional Jewish music. At the basis of so much 20th century popular music, but that's probably for another thread.

No, but that song's a classic. Gonna go over in a lot of situations. Not quite "Mustang Sally" territory but pretty close.

We don't do a lot of casinos, but I have a pretty good handle on the circuit. PM away, and congrats on the new gig!

Thanks, Dave!

Here's a Soundcloud file of us doing a traditional klezmer dance tune (no video for this one):

We mix that sort of thing with other kinds of Jewish music (folk songs, theater songs, devotional songs), and we also do Balkan songs, and gypsy songs of various kinds and from various places (like the two in the videos, which come from Italy and Hungary, respectively). We're like a village band from a village that never existed. It's a lot of fun, and I'm amazed that we've actually found a local audience for what we do, but we gig enough to keep things going (1-3 times a month, sometimes more).

Pinch me...yeah they dig my playing and I've heard some of mikes old stuff..had to tell him I can't do that mark king slap a dap like his old cat but I'm bringing a little Larry graham style up in da crib. Love it! It's the frickin' clarinet! Nobody plays the clarinet out here, let me tell ya!

Maybe you know the history of this, but when did the clarinet become such a staple of klezmer music? Does that go back to Europe? Which country?

We're in Richmond, VA.

And you're right that it's all about the clarinet! As I understand it, the clarinet entered the music in the late 19th century after Alexander II lifted some of the restrictions that had been in place for a long time on Jews playing loud instuments. Up to then, the music was played mostly on stringed instruments (fiddles, cymbaloms--sort of big hammered dulcimers--etc.). Also around that time, a lot of Jews got conscripted into the Czar's army and learned to play brass instruments and drums in military bands, so they brought those into the music when then returned home. That all fit in very well with Jazz instrumentation when Jewish musicians got to the U.S. and mingled with African American musicians in U.S. cities, and there was a lot of cross-influence, just as there had been with Gypsy/Roma musicians in Europe.

The dominant style we associate with modern klezmer music mostly originated in the areas around the northwestern Black Sea. Mostly parts of what's today Romania and Ukraine, but there are influences from all over eastern and central Europe, Russia, and the Balkans as well (and from the middle east, North Africa and Spain, too). Complicated story.

I was really lucky to meet up with our clarinet player--a great jazz and classical player who just wanted to learn how to growl like Naftule Brandwein. He learned, and to my ears, he's the heart of the ensemble. Found a great accordion player, too. Not easy around here, where most accordion players play only cajun or celtic music.

Nice! Thanks for that history. I love that stuff.

And yeah, you've got a great ensemble. Like I said, we're not afraid to play pretty much whatever music is put in front of us---we enjoy the challenge---but I don't want to touch traditional Jewish music without the proper instrumentation.

We've got an (not native-American) Indian wedding coming up in Dec and they asked us to learn a couple of traditional Indian songs. Haven't been told what they would be yet, but I'm wondering if we should be brave enough to take that on yet or not. That's another historical genre I have a lot of respect for.

You're welcome--and thanks.

That Indian music request should be an interesting challenge. I love Indian music of all kinds, but I've never tried to play it beyond a few attempts at an Indo/Persian melody I tried to arrange as a framework for improvisation with the band, but we didn't quite have the chops (or the right chops) or the instrumentation to do it right. I've also messed around with a couple of Bollywood songs, but again, something in them eluded me. Hope you can find your way into the tunes they requested. It's always delightful when a band can suprise the guests at a wedding with something like that!

Might be time for me to start a forum for musicians who are trying to have a career based in original music.wave.gif

Naw man! Lots of us get it. You don't think me and some others don't get it? You and I have had this talk before. It's been years man...like 30 doing this. I'm not out shopping tunes or trying to get a deal anymore. It's not realistic for me. But that doesn't make me less of an artist, songwriter or performer. My end result is just different than someone trying to get signed

People like me are out and about doing the cover thing because for some its fun, and for some others like me ,it's both fun and a job. It's a better job than any other I've had in my entire life. To hear someone rag on my job all the time, especially a job in music, doesn't make much sense

Instead of fighting it, you should embrace it here and go to the song-writers forum or other places that speak more about original music when you're sick of it. Dude.. I'm working on a disc, I've been writing for ever and still play originals. There's nothing to talk about though. I mean we can discuss how I sat up last night for 2.5 hours and didn't get anything inspiring. We can talk about all the tracks I've laid down in the past 90 days that amounted to about 3 minutes of good stuff. None of that is as interesting as talking about the drunk chick that flashed me her tits and mistakenly flipped me her last $20...

You're vibe and many of us here are the same. We just have to find the correct posts to get there. None of us ended up mostly playing music because we wanted to play cover tunes.

I'll toss a little lesson out...I've been without an original product for a long time. When I finish this disc I will be in an UNREAL position to both share/play and sell my music. I know you've done this before but probably not recently so maybe you don't remember. When doing 175 gigs a year, you get to interact with a lot of people. I get repeat customers and most will buy discs. If the songs are good they'll expect to hear them live and I'll easily be able to play, and probably expected to play, 10+ originals a night. That will complete this whole thing I've been doing for so long

But to drop the covers and attempt to support myself playing my tunes so I can fit in a "mold" is ludicrous.
