Members Freeman Keller
Weather warmed up above freezing so I could get back out in the shop. Have been debating various ideas for the heads of the three new barncasters. ] Sawed some of the body cutoffs into 1/8 inch thick pieces, then picked out some nice knots (knice nots?). Here is the back of one guitar My wife says she doesn't like it, I kinda do. Watcha think?

Members Grant Harding
I prefer the plain maple. The body is the star of the show IMO.
Members Grant Harding
I really like the idea of your FK inlay in the usual place & orientation of the F***** logo.

Members Les Paul Lover
You could use the darker knot wood as inlay material perhaps? I don't think the knot on the headstock adds much. It's too big imo. Perhaps if you had smaller knots, a bit like a birdseye maple veneer, but with small knots instead of the birdseye? In any case, that's only my opinion. Members badpenguin
Like Grant said, the body is the star, but I think the knots add those "earrings" that make you notice the face too.
Members gardo
An artist needs to not only have a vision but follow that vision. I say go for it. What's the worst that can happen ?

Phil O'Keefe
I think the knot on the headstock might be a bit much... it's pretty big.
Members thatsbunk
I'm not not voting, i'm voting not to not have a knot...
Members t_e_l_e
i'm undecided... while i like the idea, something say no to do it with this prebuild necks. i like wood and its character so a knot adds personality, but put one artificialy where none is been... *shrugs*
Members Emory
I am not a "knot head" so this is just a question: Is it possible that with age etc the knots could pop out from the wood, or at least rise up? Seem to recall from my youth seeing that happen from time to time. That would be my concern. Oh, and in the headstock, would the knot not add to the strength, being from a different flow of the grain? Just asking.
Members Freeman Keller
Good questions - yes the knots are potential problems in the body (as are some of the old cracks) but I have wicked some super glue in around them with the idea to stabilize them. Remember that the wood is a hundred or so years old - its probably pretty stable by now. As far as inlaying into the headstock - again, whatever I do will be only about a 1/16 thick and will be glued in with CA. It should have no affect on the strength. Members Freeman Keller
OK, there obviously isn't a lot of love for the knots - I'm working on some other ideas. Stay tuned....
