Anyone here care about the Conan Leno mess?

It's more interesting that NBC tried to cut costs by having Leno in prime time instead of the scripted dramas that traditionally dominate the 10 pm time slot...and are going to end up paying a huge buyout on O'Brien's contract, plus scramble to find prime time programming.

That timing raised a question for me. What was the status of this when they announced their Comcast deal?

The shuffle was hatched at the time they were shopping the network. Of course, they were geniuses then.

(estimated severance Conan : 32 mill / staff : 12 mill)

I do think it's hugely amusing that clueless giant NBC, who only recently owned the 10pm slot with their hour dramas have completely bollixed themselves. I would be even more hugely amused if both Conan and Leno split -- but, honest, as far as I'm concerned, that could only help bring the network up...

Hell, they could put up old movies with a Cal Worthington ad every five minutes and it would be an improvement.

As a non 'merkin I don't get to see this often but I do occasionally on my travels around da world.

As it happens I watched the show last night (not sure if it was the latest or not) from my hotel room in Helsinki, primarily because Jeff Bridges was going to be on and I like his work. I didn't make it through to Mr Bridges' appearance because Conan was not just "not funny", he was downright annoying. I switched it off. Maybe it was just a bad night - I dunno.

I think Conan is very funny. Sort of like Letterman in the first year or his pre-late night persona. As far as "I don't watch TV..."

Well, I do. I treat it like candy and pop music, to carry my analogy through. Sometimes I like a little brain vacation. So sue me! :)

I don`t think it was a bad night, thats Conan in a nutshell. He is more silly and stupid than funny and his interview chops are horrendous. As Lee said, most of those shows are brain time outs. I don`t have a problem with that, I just don`t watch it. If I want a brain time out, I usually chill out reading a book or lying on the couch with some wine or Baileys and watch the baseball game or hockey, a documentary...

From the Leno and Letterman that I have seen, I enjoy Leno more because I think hes a kid at heart whereas Letterman is very dry. Whatever the case, if the networks had to depend on me for their $$$, they`d all be out of business.

I think my the distaste I have toward Letterman is rooted in the brief moment when I thought he might be a sort of post-hippie Dick Cavett -- but he just became one of those smart guys who swings between smarmy insincerity and snide condescension and never really goes anywhere.

At least Leno has an amazing collection of vintage cars.

Conan O'Brien is singularly the most unfunny man who ever graced a television set. He and that 1980's-tired Letterman should scoot from the tube entirely.

9/11 changed the mood and discourse and priorities and tone of America forever.

Leno, O'Brien and Letterman all belong to pre--9/11 in their sensibilities.

Bingo. Sounds kind of like magazine publishers..."Hey, we can make more money if we cut pages!" without quite getting the concept that people buy magazines to read things, and things to read appear on pages.

But...I'm starting to see a disturbing trend in my own life. I actually liked Windows Vista (well, the 64-bit version at least, never tried the 32-bit one). I think Gibson's Dusk Tiger looks cool. And, I enjoyed having Leno on at 9PM because I was usually finishing dinner around then, and would catch his monologue before going back to work. Maybe I'm a contrarian at heart.

Proof that even in today's America, some people still know how to write.
