My Gibson SG is worth $599 in trade. The guitar cost $1199 last year.

I can't even seem to unload it locally for $850.

This is a sick joke

I'm not laughing.

Seems my Epiphone days are slowly coming back

as I don't think I'm ever going to sink high dollars on a Gibson again.

the big BS slapped me right in the face.

UPDATE:

Done cryin the blues. Thanks for your answers they are most helpful

well sure, when it is that close to new you are gonna take a hit. Why buy a used guitar when you can get a new one of the same model for just a hair more. You lose a couple hundred the moment you walk out of the store with it.

Are you talking about Standard with a MAP of $1199? If so, you paid too much. You should be able to get one for around 15-20% off of MAP ($960-1020) new.

Even if you only got $800 for it used, that is better resale value than you'll get for most other brands. $599 trade value is irrelevant, you'll get raped on trade in no matter what the brand...

Well, I did fail to say that I got it on President's Day Weekend 2011 with a considerable discount...but not like I'm going to advertise that.

Bought it for just over $1000 after taxes, but still.. it sells for $1199 new.

I do understand what people are telling me here,

makes total sense.

I get the 'pawn shop' trade in thing..seems to be the norm now -

about 50% the value in most cases.

Just didn't know that would apply to a Gibson instrument ..

I thought they were immune.

Right, but it sells for a MAP of $1199 new, which can be haggled down. So the 'real' new price is closer to $1000 unless you find a buyer that is clueless. So in the end, if you only lose 15-20% off of your original purchase price, you're not doing bad. I don't think anyone thinks Gibson retains anywhere near 100% of MAP on resale, they just retain a lot more of their original price than many other brands.

I've purchased numerous other brands (PRS, G&L, Ibanez, Jackson, ESP, etc.) at much more significant discounts (usually 35-40% off of MAP), and still lost considerably more than 20% of my purchase price when I sold. I've picked up a few new Gibsons at 35-40% off and have sold every one of those for a profit...

Likely because it's an SG to start with; not one of the more popular style guitars compared to Tele's, LP's and hollow bodies. Perhaps it was overpriced to begin with?

How in the hell is it worth $599? I have NEVER seen an SG Standard go for less than $750 where I live in the SF Bay Area. Either you live in the middle of bum-f*ck nowhere, or someone is straight up trying to rip you off. I'm going to assume that is the "trade-in" value that a pawn shop offers you to rape you or because they assume your desperate. Honestly, depending on your market, if you want to sell it locally, offer it at $750. That's the minimum they go for here in the Bay Area, and keep in mind we have a highly saturated market of used high-quality instruments here.

Just to give you an Idea:

Am. Standard Strats sell for as low as $550 here and

Gibson LP Studios for as low as $600

I'm wondering if the used market hasn't been depressed by all the MIC fakes? I haven't seen a corresponding drop in the price of Fenders -- a late model MIA standard will still generally net you at least $750 on CL...

Good luck with that. Judging by an X friend's Epiphone collection, I'd not want to go backwards.

The SG Standard sold for as much as $1499 at one point a few years ago

and I never thought I could own one

but when they got as low as $1199 I never hesitated.

If Gibson bumped the price back up then the value would rise as well.

Gonna hold on and see what the future brings.
