Down to three..

Warmoth strat, American standard precision bass, Squier CV 50s precision bass.

Traynor Dynabass 200T, Orange micro terror 1x12 cab.

Bought sold a ton but this pretty much does everything I need.

I'm down to an acceptable amount of stringed instruments.

2010 Gibson Songwriter Deluxe

Radio King ROS-6 (updated with camel bone bridge pins and actual Grover open back tuners)

Kohala KP-B ukulele

Fender Telecaster Deluxe with factory Tremolo (Mexican re-issue) - I have a set of used Catswhisker full range pickups that I haven't installed yet.

Ibanez SA 160 (my "cheap" guitar)

Squier Jaguar bass

Custom Chandler 5 string bass (was my main instrument during all my gigging years)

Truth is, most of these things are inexpensive. The radio king is a $200 Chinese guitar with a solid top, The Ibanez cost me $98 out of pocket and I put another $100 into it replacing the tremolo bar and back plate cover (both not included for my $98) and a Duncan lil'59 for the neck that I haven't installed yet. The Jag bass was also less than $100. The tele, Gibson, and Chandler are the only "expensive" instruments I own now, and I might sell the tele - I simply don't play enough anymore. :-(

On the upside, It's kind of unbelievable what you can get for $100.

Yeah, I second this question. Even with my humble (by comparison to GAS-man) collection, I can usually only keep maybe 8-10 of those instruments set-up to my standards and in playing rotation. Granted, season changes in New England can be harsh on instruments. But do you guys with the hoards do all your own set-up work or are you keeping a luthier on retainer? :)

First, I absolutely do not recommend that anyone work on developing a collection of guitars anywhere near the size of what I've done. Seems like that was a more common pursuit a decade ago or so, but I feel no bragging rights on where I got to, it's in fact something I don't usually discuss, since it basically solicits a WTF? response. But it's been a bit of an OCD process for me (as I've often said, "but better than hookers or crack"), and while it's been entertaining, it also brings with it the stresses of maintenance, expense and clutter. The worst being the latter. What I want to do next is thin out some that might be "lesser examples" of styles which I may have duplicated. It's a little problematic for me, however, since I really don't have any guitars that I don't believe have their own merits; but some were either bought with projects in mind, or they need some upgrades to turn them from fair to good. Those are the ones that I should probably relocate first, but OTOH, in another 8 years I'll be retiring and then I'll have more time on my hands for modding and dispositions.

But yes, I do my own set up work, but I'm not skilled yet on fret leveling and electronics [soldering]. I've been collecting guitars since '84 (before that, I'd only had 2 guitars) and over the years I've only sold off about six and given away a few to my son, and I probably got most of my guitars in just the last 15 years or so - a fair number of those arising from GAS-inducing HCEG. Now that I've cooled down my GAS jets, and not so many coming in "fresh", I do have an accumulation of guitars that are due for string changes, so good chance when I pull out one that's been in storage, it will need new strings for it to sound and feel right. But as far as storage goes, I use those stacking wire shelves and have created two spaces in the house with double-decker levels for guitars with their cases/gigbags, but I need to sell off about 30 or so just to make access to all of them easier, i.e, I don't want to have to move anything to reach one.

But so far this year, I'm doing good. No "NGDs", just a couple pedals. And I'm no longer pulling the trigger on SDOTD just because "it's a good deal". I have too many of the bases covered to do that anymore. And I'll probably be posting some for sale here soon. Things like Squier '51, Tele Custom II, Peavey Reactor, some PRS SEs and possibly an SG and LP or two. I also might look at selling some that were limited editions where the demand in the used market has pushed prices above the original purchase costs (like some Fender Ltd's or Gibson GOWs/GOMs). At least I never bought a Gibson reverse V. LOL

But the thing that is tough for me as a GAS'r, is that I can truly enjoy playing anything from my '59 RI LP (the most pricey git I bought) down to a guitar that may have cost me 1 to 3 hundred bucks. I enjoy the different voices. And even when you have a guitar that might sound a bit muddy, I have those experiences where you hook them up to something like a Blues Junior, and now they sound just about right by giving the amp more body to its tone, i.e. matching of guitar to amp is also a fun trippy experience. So for me, it's been a lot about "entertainment" and I figure to lose about 30% on guitars where I paid close to MAP, and then there's some that will have appreciated over my cost. So anyway, when I retire, it will be like having my own pre-stocked guitar store and I'll be busy posting on ebay and Reverb until I'm happy with my space issues.

I think the guitar players that are good at keeping their collections low, are those who value "feel" above most anything else. Feel and stability are the two most popular issues for working players, whereas a wide variety is like a tennis player who is constantly changing their rackets, i.e a bit of a disadvantage

How many guitars do you have? 13

what did you start out with and where has your evolution taken you to today? Started on a late 50's Old Kraftsman that was given to me by a special person who played it in the 60's. After a year or so I upgraded towards gear needed to play the music loved, electric blues and metal.

Lets see some pic's.

Old Kraftsman:

Everything else:

Schecter%20Damien%20Solo%20Elite%201_zpswaij6hly.jpg

What's on your want list?

At present I don't have anything on my want list. I do look for exceptional deals though.

Out of all of them, which are your favorite (go to pieces of self expression?)

It's the mood of the day kind of thing. Blues, rock, or metal; plugged or unplugged.

very nice collection, but i would love to see more pictures of this, is this a maple fretboard, or did it just became so light over the years?

8 electrics, 11 acoustics, 2 basses, and an Irish Bouzouki. I was trying to get it all down to 16. Oh well, I tried....

No GAS. Martin guitar prices are insane here, so that has killed whatever Martin lust I've had. Electric gee-tar lust hasn't affected me for a while, but I always want to try out nice acoustics.

doesn't matter how much it is worth. this guitar looks very interesting and unusual, if it plays also well, there is a lot of value in it :)

About 40, though I don't keep pics of them for the most part, but here are a few. I'm actually looking to sell quite a few. I've owned more than 100; there was always another one out there I thought I had to have, but those days are pretty much gone. I still want - and plan to get - a White Falcon, probably the SS model.

The green '62 Reissue Strat pics are the ones taken by the guy I bought it from. And the three "Mary Kaye" finish guitars are different: the one in the pic immediately below is one of the first Eric Johnson Strats off the line, the second is a "partsCaster (Warmoth neck, GFS body, Callaham bridge, Eric Johnson loaded pickguard) and the last one is a '57 Reissue limited edition w/ gold hardware.

I have six electrics and one acoustic:

Gibson Les Paul Junior (dark sunburst)

Gibson Les Paul 1960s Tribute with P90s (tobacco burst)

Gibson ES335 dot (sunburst)

Fender Special Telecaster (blonde)

Squier CV 1950s Telecaster (white/tortoiseshell guard)

Fender roadhouse stratocaster

Martin DC 1E electro-acoustic.

I am quite a fan of P90 guitars and particularly love my Junior - it is just so much more versatile than it at first appears and is my main gigging guitar... however, i recently acquired the LP tribute which is also really great so that might usurp the Junior... maybe. I also LOVE ES335s, and use that for slide (as it has a slightly higher action) and some songs that work better with 'buckers. I have considered using this more across the board. I use the Fender Special Tele for particular songs in our band that require a Fender as a first preference - RHCP, Jeff Buckley, and a few other things. The Special Tele I think is the best thing Fender makes as a gigging tele - powerful pickups (bridge pickup is quite dark, which is GOOD in a tele), traditional layout, great neck, fat frets etc. The Squier CV is super light, sounds awesome and I love its bridge pickup... but it plays second fiddle to the other tele. It is just such a good example of that model that I am loathe to part with it. The stratocaster is... meh. As most (standard layout) stratocasters are IMO. I don't really use it live, but it is fun to mess around with at home.

The guitars I have purchased over the years and subsequently sold say a lot about me too: I have had three different LP standard types - they just don't do it for me, compared to LPs with P90s... just not dynamic enough, or too flat/muddy sounding - and I have even had a VOS 58. Just quite dead compared to my Junior and ES335. ES335s are vastly superior in nearly every respect to LPs for me, especially sonically. I have owned a few Baja Teles... buying into the hype. I just don't think they are all that great. They are OK, but the bridge pickup is very icepicky to me, so sold, and I realised I am not really a 'fat neck' person (incidentally, I think the pickup combos on Bajas require certain 'compromises' and you are better off creating your own tele from a platform). I have had two SGs - again, a bit flat sounding, and they often have this weird problem with the 12-13 fret where they have a dead spot....

I started out on a broom and graduated to a tennis racket

badminton, squash or real tennis racket?

was it one of the old heavy wood frame ones or one of this new lightweight carbon fibre stuff with no soul?

with how much kilo tension do you string it up?

:D

I've got six right now ,. Two acoustics ,one semi-hollow body and three solid bodies. Rather than adding anything new I'll mod what I have.to get them more dialed in ,unless of course something else happens to catch my attention.
