Members mbengs1
I hear guitarists like steve vai and zakk wylde and I notice they have an effect going for them when playing leads aside from distortion and delay. it sounds like a sonic maximizer or detune? I really can't figure what effect it is.

Members mbengs1
Like steve vai. when he plays lead in his instrumental songs, he sometimes steps on a pedal before entering. it makes the tone cut through the mix better. it sounds like detune to me. but I don't know... Members DeepEnd
A bigger and brighter pedal? Seriously, I'd think in terms of a boost pedal. They often have basic EQ/tone controls.
Members badpenguin
I've got one for 7 dollars. I don't think it has a "Vai" setting on it though.
Members TheForkWigger
He may be using something more complex with different loops that can be switched in. So it may not be a single effect but an entirely different signal chain.

Members the hankering
I think an EQ pedal is a decent place to start.I mean you can use it as a "tailored" boost so you can try some different curves out"brighter" is pretty well defined, but "bigger" is a bit more abstract so the solution isn't as clear cutwith boosting, if you are doing it before a dirty amp, you aren't just going to change volume, but the tone as well so having a little EQ option to tweak that can be helpful. also remember if you are hearing it in multitrack recorded music. they can alter things in the mixdown so it's a bit of an illusion
Phil O'Keefe
If you want to experiment with an EQ pedal, you can do so inexpensively with a Danelectro Fish & Chips. They work great as a boost too, and they're very inexpensive. Lots of folks here own / use them - including me.
