Might get one within the next couple weeks or so. Something I drew up myself and it's not something I'd regret when I'm older. I'm currently trying to get some info on good local places (Bellingham, WA in case anyone knows of someone) but have read pretty bad reviews all around.

Everybody judges people by their appearance. Everybody.

You can be the nicest guy in the world, and look like a dork, and everyone will assume you're a dork until you prove otherwise. Why people would
want to go out of their way
to get people to assume they're a dork is beyond me.

Yet studies have mostly shown that people into outrageous clothing, tattoos or body piercings generally have self esteem issues and would rather you judge them by their perceived disagreeable appearance, then by meeting them and simply not liking them. "You don't like me because you feel threatened by my tattoos!" Yeah, right.

Of course there are some people who just like them, but I'm sure that's a pretty low percentage. If you ask 100 kids in high school about some guy with a sleeve, they'd probably go "Bad ass, tough guy!" Then ask 100 working adults and they'll go "the guy who works at the car wash until he's 65."

The fact everybody seems to hide their tattoos when going for a job interview or to meet the new girlfriends parents tells you even they know it was a bad idea and they know they're going to be judged harshly by it.

I respectfully disagree, and you have not presented enough conclusive information to back your point...It's speculation. The people you are describing in these studies seem to fit a certain profile and are more extroverted...Or, have esteem issues and are trying to fit in. You see the same thing on the HC forum...Some people try to fit in by sounding cool or being funny to appeal to the masses.

Also, many people hide their tattoos because they are placed in areas that are normally concealed by clothing (e.g., shoulder, back, leg, etc.). Most people don't rock neck or face tattoos, unless they are hardcore tattoo enthusiasts

@Dr Wanker: I'm calling bull{censored}. Cite your studies.

@Mike-o: When I'm all wrinkly and {censored}, my ink will be too, and that's just fine with me. That's part of the deal: when you get a tattoo, you're buying a piece of art that's going to change with your body and die with you. To some extent, you're embracing the inevitability of death. Considering that in America it's a sin to look older than 25, it's no wonder some people get all squicky about it.

Just out of curiousity, what do you people plan on doing when you're old and wrinkly and realize the stupid metal tattoo you got is {censored}ing stupid

can't believe no one posted this..........

.........Trent and JJ when they are my age.

anyway I am already old and wrinkled and I have no tattoos.

Old guys with new tattoos look plain pitiful.

Old guys with old tattoos look cool.

The same thing I'm doing now. wtf? That's like asking what I plan on doing with all my guitars when I get old, or what I plan on doing with my penis when I get old and wrinkly.

I plan to
die
when I am old, so the fact that I have tats doesn't change the plan. Each one is a memory of a time and place so when I am old I will still have those memories of when I was younger.

I got my 1st one 20 years ago, haven't changed my mind about them yet, I'm 38, have a wife and 3 kids but I got my nose pierced last year. I do it because I don't have to answer to anyone and if it offends someone I see that as their problem not mine.

This times about a thousand. I always hear people say things like wow that isn't going to very pretty when you get old and wrinkly. The thing is nothing about you will be pretty when you are old and wrinkly so what is the problem?

Dude is that avatar you? If so you could be the evil twin of a friend that comes out to a lot of our shows.

i'd advise you to give what you've drawn to the artist and let him/her work with it. there're subtleties in the art of a tattoo that are sort of specific to it.

you'll wind up with a piece you're much happier with, i promise.

Absolutely. I picked an artist whose work fit what I was after, so I had some trust in him from the beginning. He looked at the art work that I brought him and recommended a series of small changes that he thought would tattoo better but would still maintain the essence of the piece. He was absolutely right. I doubt that most people would even notice the changes if they had the original art work next to the tattoo, but the changes allow the tattoo to work properly with the 3-dimensional surface of my arm and the way the skin moves and reshapes as muscles move.

I don't have any tattoos. If any of my 3 kids plan on getting one, they better count on marrying someone rich. There's a clause in my will that states that after I die, all three of them have to have an examination by two independent dermatologists who have to certify them tattoo free. Any heirs determined to have a tattoo(s) will be written out of the will and the money gets split by those who don't. If all 3 have tattoos, the money is placed into a trust for their children if they ever have any, to which the same rules apply.

It's an amount in the low 7 figures so a bit of a motivator.

I'm glad your not my parent. Are you raising sheep or individuals. The fact that you are trying to control them with money as a motivating factor is sad. If they came home with a boyfriend or girlfriend you didn't like did you offer them a car if they would stop dating them? I hope they take their inheritances and get sleeved up. Let your children be who they are going to be. Money doesn't buy happiness. I will support my children( and I have two) in any endeavor they choose. Above all I want them to be happy. End of story.

I'm always surprised at a) how judgmental people can be about people with tattoos and b) how many people's experience seems to be limited to only "tramp stamps" and crude work that looks like it was done in the prison or the army.

I just have to laugh at the stereotyping... especially when I think of the people I know with the biggest/most tats... hmm... a vegan marathon runner who's trying to get into grad school, a web design expert who had a successful long career at Adobe, and- oh yeah... my wife, who has work all over her back and two really big pieces on her forearms and works in accounting at the headquarters for a major department store. And she isn't trying to "threaten anyone with her appearance"; her pieces are absolutely stunning works of art.

I keep meaning to get a tattoo, but I just haven't gotten there yet. There is some nice artwork in this thread. I just can't decide on what art I want on my body.

The pain doesn't scare me. After gender reassignment, facial reconstruction, breast augmentation and over 200 hours of electrolysis, I should be able to handle the pain of a tattoo.

That's what I was thinking. And it frightens me; especially when I see my friends around me having a quarterlife crisis when they realized they had the potential to become whoever they wanted to be but instead settled for that mediocre cubicle life day in and out.
