Members eyobeez
If you play .13s, I REALLY REALLY love the Tony Rice bluegrass ones. The treble frequencies are smooth and pleasing from the first strum, and they last a while. Good price, too.
Members DeepEnd
I haven't tried them but there was a thread about them about a year and a half ago: http://www.harmonycentral.com/forum/forum/guitar/acapella-42/31649185-martin-retro-strings. Forum member katopp wasn't impressed. More recently there was a thread about D'Addario nickel bornze: http://www.harmonycentral.com/forum/forum/guitar/acapella-42/31957961-d-addario-nickel-bronze-strings. Those got more love than the Retros. And no, I haven't tried those either, mainly 'cause I'm cheap.

Members katopp
Yep, that thread is a really old one.In short: it depends on what you are looking for. If you are after early hillbilly/folk and/or piedmont or delta blues, those strings will be on top of your wishlist. But if you after more modern tone, you will not like them. Members Gary Blanchard
I tried them and did not care for them; they made my Epiphone Masterbuilt sound thin. I had to use white bronze strings for the Epiphone A/E with the magnetic pickup, and don't care for those unplugged either. I guess it depends on your playing style and your own ear. Members Grant Harding
The nickel bronze are the opposite of vintage, that's for sure. They're punchy and have a strong treble response. I got mine for my AE and they suit rock and pop well. I'll probably go back to Elixir when they die, or DR if they come through with some product. Members DeepEnd
Anyone know how well the Ernie Ball aluminum bronze strings work with a mag pickup? Aluminum isn't magnetic but alloyed with other metals, who knows? HC's Chris Loeffler reviewed them three years ago (http://www.harmonycentral.com/expert...guitar-strings) but didn't mention they magnetic properties or lack thereof. Members Gary Blanchard
I'll check those out. I like the guitar, but am not pleased with the unplugged sound.

Members katopp
Aluminum is not, was never and will never be magnetic. Bronze is neither, So, all a mag pup will pick up is the steel core.

Members Grant Harding
Cool! Do they use it to calibrate the magnetic field?
Members DeepEnd
Beats heck out of me. This says they're magnetized by an external magnetic field: http://www.first4magnets.com/tech-centre-i61/information-and-articles-i70/alnico-magnet-information-i84/how-are-alnico-magnets-made-i97. I'd think the strength of the external field would determine that.

Members Freeman Keller
That is a 1930 Martin 0-17 that needed its bridge reglued. I was able to do it with hot hide glue and when I was done the neck angle was perfect (after a mere 80 years) The case was like a little time capsule - a hand embroidered strap, a couple of guitar method books (25 cents, even), a pitch pipe (80 cents), and a set of Black Diamond strings. I put a set of new ones on it and spent several lovely evenings before I had to give it back
