Members HP Hovercraft
I think it adds a lot if done well. I have no idea if John Mayer does it well or not, and have no intention of finding out.

Its pretty cool when 311 brings out mini-kits for the entire band drum solo
Members LSDis4me
Blame Mick Jones. But it was cool when he did it.
Members RadioSilence
My friends' band used to do that on the intro to one song, but only because the drummer was playing glockenspiel at the time.I think it stems from this:

Members pbone
I predict this thread will spark a good amount of constructive and thought provoking discussion; 50 pages minimum and major motion picture studio interest
Members macadood
i've seen enough bands do this kind of thing live. i mean not every song demands like 6 people playing different instruments and parts. for more transparent songs instead of the non-essential musicians just standing around or hiding backstage having a beer/smoke, they might as well be playing something

Members npfrs
I'm actually planning on doing this for a showcase in November. I'll have a floor-tom + snare, the other singer has a snare, the keys player has a floor tom, then there's the drummer. It's used for the intro to a song where I'll make a loop out of my drums, then hand-out homemade shakers to the audience. SHOWCASE ACHIEVED! Also, I played with a band in Southhampton last year that did this kinda thing pretty well. My First Tooth they were called. Also... At first, I thought you were talking about the fad of every musician having to wear a vest like it's an official dress code.
