Members wankdeplank
Hamer Special definitely one of my favorite guitars in the entire world (though mine has buckers). Sometimes I think my Hamers eat my Gibson for lunch. So why'd you change out the stock P90s?
Members wankdeplank
Well the quintessential P90 tone has to be the LP Jr tone all fuzzed out and saturated. I got to play an old 60's Gibson LP Jr once in a vintage shop and it was a transcendental experience.

Members Notes_Norton
I have a P90 Gibson ES-330, a P90 Epiphone Casino, an ESP/LTD Les Paul I put GFS Mean 90s in and a Parker DF522NN with P-Rails/ The Epiphone has Duncan P90s and sounds the best to my ears, and the Parker with the P-Rails is the most versatile and my gigging guitar. The thing with me is this. Once I got used to the P90 sound with it's clear ping, dynamic response, and pure tone, everything else just sounds dull by comparison. Members speakerjones
I actually really liked the stock pickups. This was my first really good guitar that I owned. I bought it 20 years ago. At some point I needed some cash, so I sold it to my best friend. He swapped the originals out for Dimarzio VP90's which are sort of like p100's - humbucking and just not quite the same as a true P90, and proceeded to lose the Customs that were in there. So I bought this back from him last year. I did a little restoration work on it, and was going to put the stock Duncans in it. In my search to find Duncan Customs I found a great deal on a pair of antiquities and decided to give them a try. I love them so far!

Members badpenguin
Gotta agree with sound. Pete's tone with his SG, is what the P90 sounds like.My P90 beast is my Ibanez JS700, and it plays like butter, and sounds all nice and creamy. I also wired a push/pull, for those times when you need a hum.
Members gardo
I went to my source for demos,Phil X ,and found some p90'sFirst an LP jr Next an ES 350 I've gotta go with the ES 350 even though the movable bridge can be a drawbackI played a big old jazz box for years and never had a problem with the bridge but then I don't play like Phil X either. Members Karma1
I like the tones I get from the P90's in my Epiphone ES-295 (with Gibson pickups.) This is my first P90-equipped guitar, so I don't know if its just this one or not, but I find the pickups to have a bit of noise and hum when recording. Its not as noticeable in a live band context, but more obvious in a studio setting. I'd be interested to hear other player's experiences.
Members gardo
That's exactly why I'm undecided about P90's, they are singlecoils so there will be noiseStill I like the guitar
Members Notes_Norton
All single coil pickups are susceptible to hum. The humbucker solves this by putting two coils and magnets in opposite polarity side by side, so the hum of one is 180 degrees out of phase with the hum of the other, canceling out the hum. But nothing is free, and that comes with a price. It also distorts the tone and compresses the dynamic response of the pickup. As far as I'm concerned, the hum is not noticeable while playing, but the duller tone of the humbucker is. So that's my preference, yours may be different. BTW, that's a beautiful Epi. Members Notes_Norton
I looked at those two hollowbodies side by side and can't decide which I like better . Both are beautiful Thanks. The Gibson gives me higher fret access, and it's a 1970 Kalamazoo classic. It has better wood and sounds better as an acoustic. The Epi is a 2002 MIK/Peerless with Duncan P90s, and it actually sounds better plugged in. I love them both. Incites and insights by Notes

Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted May 21, 2015 Moderators Share Posted May 21, 2015 There is a P90 equipped guitar that isn't as worthy as any other? Even the Les Paul BFG with a bucker bridge and a P90 neck kicked all kinds of arse. My regret is that in 1957, Gibson didn't create the worlds first HSH with two humbuckers and a P90 in the middle, coulda called it the Les Paul Face Ripper
Members Elias Graves
I've had several including a Casino and a PRS SE Soapbar that were pretty nice. My #1 right now is one I built myself. It's a hollow 14" thinline with a P90 bridge and Firebird neck pickup.

Members slvrsrpnt
I had a P90 put in the middle when I had this one built. I wanted it butted up with the bridge pickup, but still pretty cool

Members Verne Andru
I have to say Mountain's Mississippi Queen is what a P-90 is all about: I've had a few. Aerodyne Tele with a P-90 at the neck. Really nice growl. Put a set of P-Rails in a Hagstrom Viking - great sounding P-90's. And I gotta say the stock P-90's in my Epiphone Wildkat kick all sorts of ass.
