  • How to spot a fake epiphone

Hey guys, I know there are a lot of fakes out there. I'm about to pull the trigger on an Epi Slash model (the tobacco burst) what are some things to look out for to make sure i can tell the difference between the real thing and a fake?

    Thanks

My thought is when buying an Asian guitar, ethical issues aside, I'm far more concerned about the quality of the guitar than if it is real or fake. For all I know the fakes and the real Epi's might be made in the same factory by the same people using the same materials.

I didn't know there was any money to be made faking Epiphones.

Unless its a high end EPI, I don't see any profit to be made counterfeiting a budget guitar. If and Epi sells for $300 the builder might make what $100 after shipping. A counterfeit costs the same money to build. They are usually sold cheaper to hook buyers. Are they going to go through all that trouble to make $25~50 or will they target the $1000 Epi? Most of them are made in China or Taiwan and as Stormin says, They may be made in the same factory and being sold under the table.

Why would you forge 2p coins?

I'm wondering why there are Epiphone fakes.

                  1. Take a guitar that should barely sell for $100
                  2. Mark it up to $300
                  3. Say "HEY! THIS GUITAR SHOULD SELL FOR $500!"
                  4. ???
                  5. PROFIT!

Why wouldn't they just make fake Gibsons then?

They do. Same guitars, different headstocks. They've got all the price points covered, just like the real thing! Doug Kauer even found a fake Kauer on one of those Chinese sites. LOL
