Members sleewell
tax return time!!!!!!!! looking for a guitar with P90s. been thinking about a crimson red JA 90 tele or possibly the goldtop agile AL 3010 2p90 model. i've read the reviews on both guitars and they both sound pretty sweet, however i wish i could play the agile first. i like that the tele is semi-hollow but that is not a requirement. what other guitars should i be looking at? possibly an epi sg?? i am open to suggestions just please under 1k USD, would prefer a used guitar too... thanks, Bill

Members jrockbridge
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Les-Paul-Studio-60s-Tribute-Electric-Guitar?sku=H71142 If you like the neck on the 60's TLP, then I agree. The chambering and pickups create a fantastic sound! Even the middle position sounds great. Just in case it's important to you, there is no hum cancel position. But, I find the guitar to be relatively quiet compared to most typical SC guitars. I actually have the 50's Tribute and prefer the thicker neck. But, I think the features, design and sound of both models is are hard to beat. The guitars cover a ton of tonal ground from clean to dirty. One caveat is that the thicker neck 50's model has a slightly different tone than the thiner neck 60's. Whether that is good, bad or indifferent depends on individual preference. Members photon9
I've been totally feeling the SG classic lately too. Not that the $1000 price tag is prohibitive but I've never spent over $750 for a guitar and I'd like to keep it that way. Also the ones I've tried weren't... IDK they were good but not good enough to plunk down that much money on. It sure is tempting though. I have had horrible SG GAS ever since I saw Zappa Plays Zappa in December. Members Hard Truth
Besides the SG Classic $1000, other Gibson SGs with P90s include the Special 60s Tribute $800 and the Classic Faded $700.

Members Stackabones
Get one in each color. Set one up for standard playing and the other for slide and still have plenty of dough leftover. I love mine! I dig the stock pups. Even if you don't, you'll have so much spare cash in your wallet that you could go to town on a pup swap. Members RogerF
All of the above are sweet, but you can get an Epiphone Casino for around $599 in Natural and Vintage Sunburst finishes and $699 for the Cherry finish. This guitar is a Rock & Roll machine. Install a Bigsby and you'll have a true beast.

Members Special J
I've been playing P90 loaded Hamers for years, and you'd be hard pressed to find better guitars under $1k used. You mentioned liking a semi-hollow, so you might want to try an Artist Mahogany or Vanguard (same guitar, different color). Otherwise, it's tough to beat a Special with P90's for a high quality, simple, rock machine.

Members reverberlayed
Add another vote for a LP special, I absolutely love mine. Members Beyer160
Last week, I went to Banjo Mart looking for the same thing- a 2xP90 guitar under $1K. I tried the '60s Tribute LP (four of them), an SG Classic, a Casino, Riviera, and Gibson and Epi Specials. The result? I'm planning on buying another Agile AL-3000 to match my dual humbucker model. The Gibson Special was magnificent, but I didn't think it was worth double the price of the Agile. Ditto for the SG. The Casino had great fit & finish and played well, but the pickups were a little dull sounding. There's supposed to be a Casino with a Bigsby coming out this year, so I'll have to check that one out, too. I liked the Riviera, but the third pickup screws up the switching and the pickups sounded muddy- the Casino sounded a lot better. Pickups aside, I thought the Agile was a better guitar than the '60s Tribute LP, which I found really underwhelming. So yeah, lots of options.
