The Hollow Guitar

Thanks, nb. I was a little late on Mr. Show but am catching up. The Civil War: The Re-Enactments is one of my favorite bits.

EG, it's officially burgundy mist. It doesn't show up in the picture, but it has a metallic, sparkly appearance within the paint. The binding and pick guard are supposed to be white, but were yellowed when I bought it, even though it had spent most of its life in a case per the seller. I think it actually looks better yellowed anyway.

It's definitely a 330 and I suppose the color is Walnut. I bought it used in the mid 1970s.

Best I can tell it's a 1970, Gibson didn't keep good serial number records at the time. The serial number points to 1969 but the "Made In USA" points to 1970. It was definitely made in Kalamazoo MI, and is 100% stock.

It's got a bit of belt buckle rash from the previous owner, minimal fret wear, some scratches on the pick guard and of course some lacquer checking, but other than that it's in great condition for a 40+ year old guitar.

At the time I bought it I was a career sax player. I learned some barre chords and played some rhythm in bands where there was no room for a sax part, using the guitarist's "other" guitar. So I decided to get a guitar of my own. It sat neglected for years in a climate controlled room, getting played once or twice per year.

Then a couple of years ago, I decided to get serious about guitar. I checked prices and at the time a 330 like mine was going for about 5K so I bought the Casino to play on stage. As a multi-instrumentalist (sax, flute, wind synth, guitar, vocals, and sometimes keyboards) I didn't want to ding up the 330 during a quick instrument change.

The Epi Casino fit the bill quite nicely (and it's a very decent guitar).

Then I got a weekly gig on a salt water lagoon and didn't want salt air inside the Epi so I decided on a solid body guitar, so the salt doesn't get to the electronics. I settled on a Parker Dragonfly/Maxxfly (actually mine is in between the two names so I call it a No Fly).

So now that I have two hollow body guitars, I'm seriously thinking about selling the 330. I keep flip-flopping, but if someone were to make a decent offer, I'd probably let it go. I hate to see any instrument go un-played. To me that's almost as bad as turning a saxophone into a lamp ;)

And that's probably more than you wanted to know about my beloved 330.

Maybe someone can explain this. I've not found a bridge pickup that really worked in my Alleykat. I suspect it has to do with the placement. The bridge pup is a little further away from the bridge than you normally see because of the block under the bridge.

Anyway, I got rid of the rose Daybreakers in a trade and needed something to put back in the Kat. It was down to either the stock Epi pickup or the zebra 498 from my Junior. I opted for the 498.

Now, I haven't been a fan of the 498 and I didn't expect much. That pickup has always struck me as overwound, dry and gritty sounding. Imagine my surprise when it worked in the Kat. The best sounding bridge pickup I've had in that guitar.

It's weird, because I've had some of my favorite pickups in that guitar and they sounded all wrong, but now I put one in that I normally don't like at all and it kills.

:freak:

Whatever the reason, I finally found a pickup I like in this guitar and I'm happy.

Not a current pic, but, whatever.

I've been GASing for a budget acoustic archtop, so I read all 41 pages of this thread.

REALLY bad idea if I want to keep my wallet intact.

Here are my hollow and hollow-ish guitars:

Hollows1.jpg

Ric 360/6. Epi Dot Deluxe, Gretsch 5129.

Thinking about adding one of the following:

Godin 5th Ave
The Loar LH-300
Washburn HB-15

Looking for a nice one to play acoustically, but a pickup is not a deal breaker.
