I just wanted to chime in here again - just gigged my Hamer Newport this weekend, subbing in a blues band. Straight into a Soldano Atomic 16 20w. Not much headroom but a great range of sounds just working the tone and vol controls. I don't know whether the Phat Cats sound exactly like P90s but they sound bloody amazing in this guitar. A Mahogany/Spruce guitar + fat(phat) single coils + small, marshalesque amp = One winning combination

I'm not man enough to rock a full hollow, but I picked this Korean Hamer Echotone today. I need to clean her up, swap in a pair of Seth Lovers I have, oil the board, polish the frets and string her up with some heavier strings and tweak the setup a tad.... esp the intonation.

So far, me likey. I'd have to say it plays easier than 95% of the Epis and Ibanez I've played in the last few years.

It's not quite as red as in my pic. I didn't really edit the shot at all as I'll take better ones when I get the Seth Lovers installed.

The neck isn't quite as thick as a Fender C. It's about like the Warmoth Standard profile which is what is on my favorite strat.

I actually got the pickups installed tonight but... as always... something is funky. I installed them just like the Duncan Designed pickups were, but the Seth Lovers have the braided shielding of course. I think I'm going to have to insulate the braided shieldings from one another... not too hard, but I need to unsolder one of them, pull the cable back out, wrap it in whatever... electrical tape, I guess, and resolder it.

Never had to do this before. Not sure if the wiring is slightly different than on Epi LPs or Ibanez LP-type guitars, but it didn't go together exactly like those.

I did get it all setup though. Plays and feels even better than before. And sounds great, as long as the shielding on the pickups aren't touching.

What was it doing that was odd? Was it making crackling noises?

Hmmm

Dear God . . . i am inlove !!!

-
full hollow
, NO semi stuff.

Wow! I have never seen one like that before. Like a doublecut 175. All the 150s I've seen had no cut at all.

So, you gonna get it? :poke:

Yeah, the stock setup was the ground of the bridge pickup and the ground of the bridge was on the bridge pickup vol pot. The ground of the neck pickup was on the neck pickup vol pot. Worked fine, nothing weird. 100% good. I installed my pickups exactly the same way. On the bridge pickup, it's 100% good, on the middle position, there's a slight bit of funkiness... on the neck pickup, maybe it's fine, maybe it crackles like there's a point somewhere that isn't soldered, but I can reach in the F-hole and separate the pickup leads and it works just fine...

:idk:

I'm pretty well versed in guitar wiring and I was a science major in college and I've had about 6 years of physics. Doesn't make a bit of sense but who know...

The old pickups had plastic insulation whereas the Seth Lovers are braided shielding. I'm not completely happy with the Seth Lover in the bridge so when I get some time, I'll probably wire in a plastic-insulated bridge and see what happens.

Either way, the guitar, on the neck Seth Lover through a 5E3 or the AC15 with some top end rolled off is pretty damn sweet. :thu:
