...first chance I've ever had to name drop on the web....honest!!

I am a trained 'classical' viola player so have had the good fortune to play and meet with with all sorts of people in my studio days....I suspect that those of you in the US will not have heard of most of them though?

Sting (stole a vol-au-vent off my plate at JPJones' daughters wedding!), John-Paul Jones,(he played bass-balalaika in a gypsy band we had going!) Midge Ure (Had a band called 'UltraVox'-I played viola in the stage version of a song called 'Vienna'),
Maddy Prior (vocalist with a popular British folk-rock group called 'Steeleye Span'), Phil Johnstone, Rev Hammer. Edi Reader, The Levellers, The Pogues, Nigel Kennedy,.......lots of classical guys/conductors etc.....things start to get a bit obscure here so I'll STFU!......Would be interested to know if you have heard of any of these though?

Great times!!

Long-time Steeleye Span fan, myself, and Maddy's work w/ June Tabor ("The Silly Sisters") is just astonishing. SS did a week-long stint here in town, around '74 & a high-school friend ended up squiring the band around town the whole week, got in to all the shows, still gets mail from them....

'Course, he didn't tell me about until after they'd left.

Never saw Ultravox in concert, but I know & love 'Vienna' - lucky you to have gotten thak gig!

Of the others you mention, I've heard of the Pogues (of course).

Glad somebody remembers Ultravox!
I was always a bit annoyed that the single 'Vienna' topped the charts for about 6 weeks, but used a synth backing; not live strings!

I was lucky to get the stage gigs- Midge wanted a string quartet of pretty girls!....they couldn't find a pretty viola-player!!

Still......I only had to play half a dozen minims.......at about

Charlie Pride

Hal Holbrook

Jack Klugman

Rock Hudson

Tom Waits

These are folks I at least exchanged words with. I used to have a job in my yute as a backstage doorman. I "saw" a lot more than that. Probably "seeing" Dolly Parton and Bob Hope up close was too of my most enjoyable moments there. For different reasons of course. :D Dem were the 70s for me.

I drove a limo in Manhattan for about 5 years. we catered to the movie/tv and music industry.

I met loads of famous people. it was cool to drive them. it was a chance to have a conversation while on a ride from the airport more so than just meeting them at a show or in the street. most were pretty cool.

then there are the people you run into in the steet in the city too. most of the time you dont realize it was who it was till they were already a fart in the wind
