It seems like literally everything is a joke to kids now. At least it is on the internet.

Previous generations never even considered making light of pedophilia.

That's because our media completely change the way we interact. Previous generations never had the internet.

The problem is that the previous generations pushed also the cult of the dollar to next levels.

It came to a point that which way is best to make more money, at the expense of the others but at another scale. It's grown to a global scale where the rich man is making his money thanks to a group of hard working, labour hungry men and women in 3rd world countries.

I long for the days when one was forced to exploit his own serfs and slaves. what have we become?

This. I was born in 85, so I can remember not having a computer, cell phones, internet, cable, etc. It's crazy to think how much these things are taken for granted when they really haven't been around that long.

I remember black and white tv and i havent turned 40 yet. I did have a Commodore 64 though :)

I remember when Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were shot.
I remember when the Boston Strangler was on the loose.
I rmember Charles Whitman up in the tower in Texas (on live TV).
I remember Grissom, White and Chaffee.
I remember "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
I remember Tet.
I remember hearing "Light My Fire" for the first time on AM radio.
I remember my sister and her boyfriend going to see Hendrix in NYC and coming home the next day (Mom was MAD)!
Etc.

I'm old.

There are no generations.
Only individuals.
Fulfill your own personal and moral responsibilities and respect the responsibilites of others.
Pray you're not around when the human race's need for social callibration via major conflict sets off again.
Have a drink and listen to some tunes.

The thing with "offensive" jokes is, if you take away the offensiveness and it's not funny, then it was never funny in the first place.

Every joke is offensive towards something/someone.

Every joke is offensive towards something/someone.

Lots of things can make people laugh; wordplay, equivocation, surreal situations, etc...

In addition a joke can be at the expense of a group without being offensive; there's just a need for cultural context including context of who the joke is between.

This generation will be more alienated from its previous generation than probably any other generation in history... that much I hypothesize.

The most obvious indicator is in education and technology. A huge shift has occured where there is less expectation for our youth to practice memorization and fundamentals, assuming that technology will make those cognitive processes obsolete. Critical thinking and problem-solving are the targets now. Computer algorithms like search queries still haven't quite caught up to the human capacity for decision-making based on prior knowledge, so it sEems reasonable that these are the skills we should focus on.

But I can't help the feeling that something is going awry with this. It's sort of the learning to crawl dilemma I suppose. In one regard, I see Baby Boomers everyday who don't have the confidence or skill-set to navigate through an application menu, or make basic connections between random concepts. They often have a very linear cognitive approach, like the need to read manuals from page 1 to page 2, or write down flow chart directions, etc. It seems like the latest generation should have an advantage in that arena. Or will they?

I'm just grateful to be from the generation that was born before the personal computer, young enough to acquire the skillsets and fundies, and will probably live to see AI. A sense of perspective is one of the great advantages of my gen.

Great post.
