Again, not to belabor the point (and keeping in mind I didn't say that Phait was racist, which is a silly leap to a conclusion)... but identifying the groups of people by their race didn't help contextualize his little story in any way, and only made him a target for people who will assume that his feeling are based on the race of the people involved.

That may or may not be true (hopefully not). For future reference, the story could have been just as well told without my ever having know whether the thugs were black, yellow, purple, or plaid.

So (and this is for everyone)... unless you're in a creative writing class or are creating the Great American Novel, try the following:

a. A big black guy walked through the door -- BAD

b. A big guy walked through the door -- BETTER

a. A bunch of Mexican guys looked up at me -- BAD

b. A bunch of guys looked up at me -- BETTER

a. All these Asian kids were cranking hip hop in the street -- BAD

b. All these kids were cranking hip hop in the street -- BETTER

Let's put it this way: if you wouldn't use the same sentence and specify that the people were white, perhaps you should question identifying their race when they're not.

a. The parking lot was full of white guys playing hockey -- BAD

b. The parking lot was full of guys playing hockey -- BETTER

:)

How many plaid people have you met?

Just FYI, Phait did reference the white people along with the black and you were critical of him for that.

Jeff I get your point, but it was part of context - what happened was something between 2 different races and cultures. This is not a statement for/against either, but seeing the facts for themselves.

If whatever thug was staring at the guy didn't stare at him, and consequently the guy behind me didn't mock thugs/gangs under his breath, and consequently one of them didn't call him cracker -- I wouldn't have much reason to mention any race. This was the point in the incident where it was obviously an argument starting to heat up, unfortunately, bringing in race as an element - before it got too far and they were escorted out. Yes that irritates me, but again my main point of irritation was the usual actions/attitudes of this kind of urban culture.

I'm not sure what else to say other than I tend to be thorough when I explain things, especially wanting to give context.

Here in New England, most people keep to themselves all the time. Geez, even when people are in a bar late at night, they mostly keep to themselves and the people they came with.
Of course, some drunk Aholes occasionally like to come up and F with the band members, especially very late at night (i.e., after midnight), but other than that, people pretty much just keep to themselves.
I used to think this antisocial behavior was really bad, but I can see from this thread that it does have some advantages...

Everything changes, except Jotown's post...I think you got too much delay on the return.
;)

It appears that post was the source of this morning's maintenance.
:)

Sorry about that.

I tried to post this and it wouldn't go through. When it finally did I checked it and it had only posted once. This morning I saw that it had actually posted three times. I guess I was trying to post during the scheduled update.

Sorry if I gave you a headache. :blah:

Dude, just move to Atlanta..

We all seem to get along just fine here.. After hours you can vibe at R Thomas for your late night eats.. Enjoy the wings, stuffed potatoes, fajitas and the like while Cee-Lo and his wife are sitting at the table behind you chatting with there lawyers. There's really a strange but cool vibe about that place...

Or, if you're into greasy spoons, there's The Majestic on Ponce at 3am, where the drunken clubgoers and there bull{censored} machismo take a backseat to the cheese eggs! So many great spots with great people in the "A".

Yeah sure, we have those sides of town you really wouldn't want to go to at 3am cause it's thug central, but even when I'm there I see folks getting along for the most part. If you don't want to take chances, just don't go to them cause there are so many great options here. And because it's Atlanta, almost every crowd is a mixed crowd, so were pretty used to just getting along.

Oh how I love this town!

That's funny. I was in Atlanta only once and I was a kid. Just this week I was discussing American cities and the racial tension with my wife. She's a Brit and has no clue about our different cities. I said something along the lines of, "But I remember Atlanta seemed like a place where folks just got along regardless of color.." Good to hear that's still true.

I found the same to be true of lot's of Chicago neighborhoods as well.

I was in Hollywood after a show in the late '80s or early '90s, eating at Denny's at about 2:30am, and not one but TWO people got stabbed in the restaurant in separate incidents while I was having my country fried steak and eggs.

I kept eating. Hey, I was hungry! Mmmm... country fried steak. Damn, I'm hungry again now!

I don't remember the races of the people involved. Wasn't relevant. I had to step through a little blood on my way out, though. I just hopped over the puddle... didn't want it on my shoe, you see.

I know racial tensions exist. They just seem so petty and stupid and small and inconsequential. Yeah, this is my pie-in-the-sky post for today.

I was raised in Illinois. Was the object of much ridicule due to my skin color. Then, my father didn't care for certain races. I even get it from my own extended family who think that I'm not really Chinese because I don't speak Chinese fluenty. I've experienced it first-hand from too many angles, and I'm so weary of it.

I was once snickered at for not speaking German. Hello? My mom's side of the family (non-German) emigrated here in the 1600's, and my dad's side came here in the early 1800's. And roughly 200 years later, I'm supposed to use the mother tongue?

Screw that. I took French in high school, and don't even speak that very well either. I'd have taken German, but it sounded too... German.

I think parents want to protect their kids from hanging around with criminals, Junkies, gangsters, no matter what and will use any method possible.

I believe its driven by both fear of the people they've delt with in life and love of their kids. If the job is done poorly it can appear to be racist but I dont seriously belive a parents attempts to get their children to spot a bad guy no matter what color they are is a bad thing. Its a lesson in safety.

Unfortunately if a weak minded child grows up thinking safety is a race thing or gang thing the lessons learned can be preverted into racisim. For the rest of us we se it as it is, Good or Evil Behavior. Nothing more, Nothing less untill the laws of man or common sence are broken. Then it should be viewed as either ingorance or stupidity, no matter what the cause is. The two words do have different meanings but tend to get lumped together. Ignorance carries with it an innocence because there was the lack of knowledge or education for some reason. Stupidity implies willful ignorance.

Still the law says, Ignorance of the laws are no excuse in committing a crime. Reason being is even if you dont know the laws you have the built in knowlege of whats right and wrong.

One of my dads quotes he'd use when I was growing up was, "What Right is Right - Whats Wrong is No Mand Right" That pretty much puts it in a nutshell for me.

i see racism all the time especially when i am with my band (i am the lone white guy). usually its pleasantly disguised as politely as possible and i do consider the possibility that the perpetrators dont actually mean it but it still pisses me off.

in this case it is white folks being racist.

only once in the last ten years has it been rubbed in my face that i was just a 'white guy' and this was from an extremely drunk bass player as he quit the band. it really hurt my feelings a lot and i still remember it but he does not.

Really?

I thought anyone who says "Anyone who says 'Anyone who says 'I have Black friends is a racist,' is a racist," is a racist.

Some of my best friends who are white who say "anyone who says 'I have Black friends is a racist' is a racist" are not racists, they're just smart-asses, so I'm not sure.
