I have some friends that play for a living, mostly doing the Casino circuits, but from one coast to the other. They were in need of a drummer for a 4 day gig, wednesday thru saturday, in Michigan. I would have been able to kinda living a dream for a week as a road player, but had to pass. Not only my day job is there, but also our regular band has a gig that weekend. Its nice to be regarded as good enough to do such a thing. I am very humbled. Cant express enough to the youngins out there, associate yourselves around good people and make yourself known and good things can happen if you push yourself. It's mainly going to be a jam session since none of us have played together yet except me and the guitarist. Our work schedules won't allow for any practice and its a private party with all of our friends. We already established that it won't be professional by any stretch but that it will be a lot of fun. Members kmart Posted October 14, 2012 Members Share Posted October 14, 2012 Played a private birthday party Thursday night.Was anticipating mega-challenges and/or problems, because they rented an art gallery that was all exposed brick walls and hardwood floors...and in tight quarters, that generally means no matter how much you try to keep it under control, someone will say 'it's too loud'.Reality is that 2guitar amps, bass and an acoustic kit are going to throw off a minimum level of volume., right?They had us set up facing across the width of the space, which was the smaller dimension...we were against a brick wall in a roughly 20w x 12d performance area facing another brick wall maybe 12 more feet away...Plus, we knew the place charged the client for use of the space by the hour, and so we would be rushed for set- and tear-down time. While we were in the midst of setting up, the event lead from the gallery came by and said "you know you need to wrap up playing right at 11 PM, right? [Yes, we know what time we're contracted for]. And then you need to be loaded out in half an hour, right?", to which we didn't say anything, because there's no way on earth we can be completely packed up and loaded out in 30 minutes...not when we're providing lights and PA in addition to our back line gear, in-ear and sequence rack, etc.The client had also asked us to learn a specific song, which does fall right in our very specific genre/era wheelhouse...but he came up while we were setting up and asked about it, then started giving us the 'I used to manage bands, and this is what I'd have them do...' talk.Things looked like they could go VERY off the rails, or at the very least, make for an unpleasant night.Fortunately...it was aces all around.Client and his wife were ecstatic about us overall, especially the 'special' song, event/site coordinator kept saying how great we sounded, they manned the freight elevator for us during load-out so we could focus on getting gear taken care of (and we only took 45-50 minutes to get totally out), attendees were really into it, especially a batch of songs towards the end of the first set where we had people of all ages up and dancing and cheering for 5-6 songs straight.Only bummer was getting home and only getting about 4 1/2 hours sleep before having to head to work on Friday. We took the 2.5 hour trek out to Bend, OR for the Bend Fall Festival. This was also the first time we rented a van and had all band members in the same vehicle for the trip. That made for a lot faster and enjoyable ride. The morning of the event, it was 28F. It didn't feel much warmer in the afternoon.... BUT Bend has a 5:1 female to male population, so we had a good time enjoying the local fauna. The gig was pretty fun. We played tight, and the crowd seemed to really dig it. That always surprises me because I really don't think of us as a festival type band. But we sold a bunch of CDs! The event company, C3 Events, always treats us well too. This was the fourth time we've worked with them in Bend and it's always fun. Plus the events coordinator is a very attractive, voluptuous Latina. Stage sound was great, but god damn did it sound horrible out front. Both the band before us, and the band after us had a horrible drum mix. All other instruments were well balanced, but the only bit of drums that came through the system were the hi-hats. From what the other bands said, our set was no exception. That was on my fiberglass kit with a 22" kick, this bitch has a 24" kick. I didn't want to put the band's logo on the new head since I still do fill-in gigs once in a while.The logo head is currently being used as a sign by our merch case. I always found that fans appreciated casual pics of the band so much more than "yet another stage shot of how much we rock." Y'all look like a fun group of guys. Members the DW Posted October 21, 2012 Members Share Posted October 21, 2012 Some pics from last night's gig at Kalaeloa (kuh-lie-low-ah) Raceway Park. In that last pic, you may notice the pink cars in the foreground. They were having a demolition derby fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer fund. They painted 12 cars bright pink and had at it (I didn't get to watch since it happened after we left). The roof of the car on the left had the words "I love boobs!" spray painted on it! But this gig was proof once again that just because you own a bunch of sound gear, that doesn't automatically make you a sound guy! We had trouble with the monitors the whole time, and the dude couldn't get a handle on it. Oh well.... at least the drums were provided! A vintage Ludwig Vistalite kit! Only about ten people there at the peak. There was a drum riser, but I could barely fit my five-piece kit onto it. I kept banging my elbows on the wall behind me. Better crowd, and the sound was decent, but always room for improvement. We changed our setlists up, removed a few, added a few and it seemed to work well. Booked another gig there in Nov. for a high school reunion, and to top it all off, the owner wants us up there once a month.... Tried to get some video, had the camera setup, but it ended up in a spot that I could not get to to turn it on easily, not to mention I forgot my camera. This one is located on a former Military base (Barbers Pt. NAS). Just has a small dirt track and sand drag lanes, but I am told that they are developing an asphalt track in the near future!
