OT: Massive Misconceptions you had about sounds before you knew what you know now.

When I was 12, my dad would play U2's Achtung Baby a lot in the car. I had no idea what I was hearing, but I had a vague idea that the sounds were computer generated - I'd be listening to what I now know is a guitar riff, and thinking it was made by a computer program.

Obviously, that's retarded, but hey, I just didn't know - I had no concept of how these noises were made, or what might be going on on the "other side" of the speakers.

Anyone else have wierd misconceptions like that?

When I was a kid in the 1970s, I was told

that a synthesizer can create all the sounds of the orchestra.

that Jimi Hendrix played the Star Spangled Banner with his teeth, and thus he was the greatest guitar player in the world.

A bunch of my mates lived in a shared house while they were at uni in Birmingham, and one of their housemates loved all music... unless it had keyboards in. Be it piano, organ, synth strings, wierd synths... if it was made by a keyboard, he didn't like it. He'd often love songs until you pointed out the keyboard part, then he'd never listen to it again.

After hearing Radiohead for the first time (90s), I really wanted a delay pedal. Obviously what I really needed was a whammy (150$, cheaper at the time). Today, I own 4 delays...and still no whammy.

Second. I used to think Distortion was the way too go.

And now overdrive. (concluded in the reverse order that these things don't suck)

I would should show my younger cousins (90s) that way back that trolling Yahoo public chat rooms was awesome. I called it "ruling the chatroom kingdom", where I would intimidate people in the jazz section to the point where they'd all leave one by one til I would remain the sole active member. rinse repeat.

That said, I did all that coz I thought that Jazz was Porny music.

Today, Jazz is ripping the balls out of me.

Oasis' song "Wonderwall"

Totally thought that it was a cello but a friend told me it was an ebow about 4 years ago on a distorted guitar. I have no real way of knowing but I think I looked at the players for the song and there was no cello or anything.

for a very long time I believed that you did not need any talent or creativity to make music on synths or computers

10-15 years ago, I was in a band that was continually slagged off by indie kids because we used synths. Now, all those kids are using really crappy synths and running Abletron.

I was told two things.

1) An amp needed at least 50 watts to be loud enough to play with a band. But better to get 100 watts and be safe.

2) Amp overdrive/distortion is the only kind that sounds good. Pedals will always sound inferior.

I actually believed this for a woefully long time.

I used to think if an amp wasnt valve and had 2x12 speakers, then it was {censored}... I now play a Roland JC-77 1x12 out of choice...

i love my -77! but i also run a boogie 1X12 and a carvin tube power amp with a boogie extension cab. the -77 dirty sounds like {censored}, i can't be without great dirt.
