Rusty Cooley playing fusion

I see a lot of people badmouthing Rusty and his playing pretty often... saying he doesn't play tastefully, isn't musical, etc.

So, I just thought I'd post this video of him playing some fusion lead stuff. I think the playing is pretty damn brilliant... appears to be improvised too... quite a change from the full speed shred a lot of people associate with him... check it out:

I like it a lot better than most of his stuff.

Look, the guy's obviously got just superhuman, ridiculous, insane chops, but why is it, even over a slower vamp like this, he insists on showing all of them to you before the song is over?! I'd kill to have half his technique, and then be able to spend the other half developing songwriting skills. The guy would absolutely KILL! It just all gets to be a little too... "Look what I can do!" when you're bludgeoned with it over and over again. That kind of technique has always been much more impressive to me when it's doled out in much smaller doses, but that's just M.O. :o

He actually does have a really sweet vibrato when he wants to, though. :thu:

Doesn't sound like fusion to me.... more like shredding over porn music
:o

Not really my thing, sorry...

That's okay... you listen to black metal, doom, etc. and that stuff's definitely not my thing :o

How is that not fusion though? Sounds very Holdsworth to me...

This is better than what I've heard of him before. His solo from "the Grey Tide is horrendous, IMO of course. Terrible bending, no sense of rhythm, no taste or phrasing...

I still say that he's a phenomenally boring player, because he has chosen to spend hours of his day playing exercises rather than music. With his gifting, there's no knowing what he could do if he arranged his practice time a bit differently. Who knows; maybe I'm wrong... :idk:

I have to agree with some of the posts on here. Just based on this vid/song it sounds very mechanical and has no dynamics. It reminds me of the Alex Skolnick track on Guitars That Ruled The World where he tries to sound jazzy while using a high gain shredder tone. I'm sure he (Rusty) would sound great doing prog metal but this song is meh.
