Rusty Cooley playing fusion

I just meant the angular playing style... holdsworth's lead style. Maybe not the backing track and everything about the video, but I see similarities in the style and phrasing here.... in the very least, I think it should be obvious that it's very different from his usual neoclassical prog metal shred fest... I don't see this being all that different from holdsworth or shawn lane (and I love both)... anyone complaining about the speed here would see much of the same speed with those two guys too, and I don't think anyone would argue that they don't play fusion...

I'll agree that some of the faster, odd grouping stuff is very reminiscent of Lane and Holdsworth, but the difference is that neither of those guys were anywhere near as relentless with the shred as Rusty is. Listen to Shawn's Powers of Ten record, where there are only like two songs that feature much at all in the way of the blazing, terrifying shred that Shawn was so famous for. Holdsworth definitely doles it out in much, much smaller doses as well. I think the problem most of us have with Rusty is that it doesn't appear he can help himself but to at some point explode into an all-out shredfest assault in every single song.

Am I jealous of his technique? HELL yes I am! I just think the guy's a tad more obsessed with the mechanics of the musical language than he is writing actual poetry with it.

+1

But rusty's mechanics , precision , articulation and speed have anyways been a big inspiration .. I def do the same where as i get lost in the speed and lose the poetry .

Rusty once said in his vids "our only limitations are the one's we put on ourselves !!"

uh, no it wasn't; sorry Josh
:p

It sounded the same to me except it had the porn music backing track...
:o

I disagree :o

and porn music? I thought porn music was usually known as funk? didn't sound like it to me...

I understand people don't like when he gets going really fast and doesn't let up... people see it as self indulgent or whatever... but the slower parts I think prove he can play that style and do it well... particularly the first couple of minutes of the video

Rusty just needs to wake the {censored} up and do technical death grind all the time. Srsly. THAT I would buy from him in a heartbeat. Stop all these prog and "feel" pretentions and show teh DM kidz how that {censored} gets DONE.

I'd love to see him in some kind of The Faceless/Beneath the Massacre/Arsis/Neuraxis/Brain Drill type band.

Haha, that would be cool, but I don't think he'd be into it honestly... I don't think he's into death metal vocals... I think his kind of stuff is more like his band outworld, dream theater, or nevermore... I can't stand the vocals in any of those bands myself, but I love a lot of the music.

He'd fit right in with those kind of styles... but for Holdsworth-esque players we've got dudes like Dan Mongrain and Masvidal whose chops and taste wipe the floor with Cooley...

I like it a lot better than most of his stuff.

Look, the guy's obviously got just superhuman, ridiculous,
insane
chops,
but why is it, even over a slower vamp like this, he insists on showing
all
of them to you before the song is over?!
I'd kill to have half his technique, and then be able to spend the other half developing songwriting skills. The guy would absolutely KILL! It just all gets to be a little too... "Look what I can do!" when you're bludgeoned with it over and over again. That kind of technique has always been much more impressive to me when it's doled out in much smaller doses, but that's just M.O.
:o

He actually does have a really sweet vibrato when he wants to, though.

My thought is that hes just being him, chops are part of who he is as a player. What would you expect YJM or EVH to do?

I think the guy has chops from beyond but like you, its cool when theyre used in a musical context. I dug this, its a nice departure from what we're used to hearing from RC..

I suppose so, although I don't necessarily agree that Ed would go that route, Yngwie certainly has no problems going for it early and often. Petrucci's the same way a lot of the time as well, although I'd still rather listen to DT any day.

At the end of the day ya just gotta do what comes naturally, I suppose, and melting frets definitely looks to be a pretty natural occurence for Rusty!

I do agree though, that his style probably would fit better in a heavier, more metal context similar to the Martyr clip Thinkpad posted. That might actually be interesting to hear.

nice definition. BUT this sounds nothing like holdsworth, im not saying one is better or worse but it would be like saying killswitch sounds like metallica, both metal in genre but not even close to sounding the same. just my opinion

peace

Now this is good.
:thu:

It IS good, and so is Rusty's stuff. Neither one are particularly listenable though. But that's just MO. I like the Rusty stuff for the same reason I like most shred..because of the insane speeds and lines they use. But I can only listen to it in small doses...in fact, I prefer to watch it more than listen to it.

The jazzy clip is amazing too. But I still feel the same way...only enjoy watching it because listening to it without visual context is just boring for me. Makes me want to search for the temperature somewhere on the screen :poke:
