Les Paul pickguard on or off?

OFF.

I've had my LP for a few years, and immediately took it off. From playing a lot of rhythm as opposed to lead (because i'm terrible) i've noticed a pickguard would almost work better above the strings. There's just as much of that light haze/hairline scratching above as below. You can barely see it in the right light, my guitar is just tung oiled wood, no thick clear or anything to completely protect it.
