Hey, you model builders (and some very nice ones at that), I can't imagine NOT taking those things when they're done and swishing 'em around in the air making jet noises. Tell me you still do that. Childhood can't end when we're this old, can it?

On the armor, same thing. "RRRRRRRRRRR....... POW!" Dang I love kid stuff. The building of those, at least the way it's been presented (no glue tracks, clean attachments), is anything but. Cool stuff you guys.

I sleep, steal identities on Facebook, serial kill, and.... something else... oh yeah, play around with music.

I used to be a fanatic flyer, but when my daughter was born, my wife told me my flying days were over.

My principal "other" hobby is photography. My wife told me to stop buying guitars, so I bought $10,000 worth of cameras, lenses and other crap.

I had a little Piper two-seater for a few years. Had a blast with it. But I got tired of writing the three figure checks every month to feed and take care of it.

That damn thing almost ate me out of house and home.

OK, for all you model builders and fliers, and since we are way off topic, I've got a couple of questions. I'm sort of in the doldrums of guitar building right now and for the past year or so I've been thinking about getting back in to model building and flying. I've got a wild hair to start with a helicopter (yes I know all the difficulties learning to fly them). I've looked at and got close to buying something, but keep backing off because I'm just not sure where to begin.

I know the counter rotating rotors are "easier" to fly but I think I want cyclic/collective (I've spend a lot of left seat time in various helicopters over the years and appreciate how they work). I know I want electric, I know I want something that I can more or less fly out of the box, but will challenge me for a while. I don't want to spend more than a nice starter guitar (duh), but I want reasonable quality. I probably need a simulator. I also think that I'd like to build a fixed wing R/C to keep me busy in the shop, but the helicopter is on the front burner.

So, any heli fliers out there that want to lead me astray?

Freeman, here is a simulator I highly recommend. It is not the top of the line but it's very good for 33% of the price. The simulated on-screen model response to the controller inputs is very realistic. You can try it for free for 30 days IIRC for the price of a $20 controller.

If you havent flown a collective RC heli you would be extraordinary if you enjoyed it before burning it in frustration. Here is a popular counter rotating heli that can be easily mastered and is enjoyed by many:

Shop the net for price and availability. There is endless reading on this model on the forums. For the collectives, most start with a 250 - 450 size. The Honey Bee King was popular, cheap and stable a few years back when I was really into it.

This is one of the most popular among the experienced. Chinese copies can be bought for ~$150:

I do models as a hobby too. But totally different than the beautiful examples above. I gave been involved in live steam locomotives for many years. Both the ride on kind and garden railroad scale, 1:20.3. Many of my models are completely scratch built with doing all the machining and wood work myself.

For about 10 years, I set up a portable track that I built at a train show at the Queen Mary in Long Beach. It is a 40x50 foot oval, unfortunately they quit doing the show. My track is at the top of the picture.

I was marketing this engine a few years back with pretty good success, just no profit :)

Film isn't gone. I just shot two rolls of Fuji Velvia 50 on my Nikon F4 and F100.

Bob, I am familiar with some of your other work, a piece stands proudly on my mantle. I have no connection with this, but some of our local railroad buffs run this in our riverfront park

i saw an R?C simulator at the hobby shop that had a 4-channel radio as a controller.Where can I find one before I crash my new PLane that I plan to buy in the near future!

Well, there's this:

or this:

Horizon is one of the best hobby shops IMO. I spent 10 X as much there as Tower Hobbies. There was a lot of direct purchase from China by the flyers as my interest in the hobby tapered off. Amazingly cheap if you weren't in a hurry - 6-8 weeks for the boat ride.

or the one I bought($40):

I believe you need your own controller for all of these, but I'm not sure as I only bought one, the "rcflightsim".

Here is my cheesey controller:

I really enjoy the flight simulator. Here are screen shots from two of the flying sites in rcflightsim/Clearview:
