Members CraigOrn
I've just dabbled on the Special Two, and it's a pretty standard humbucker arrayed axe. Passable, good beginner axe or even as a beater, but I would add the caveat that I really don't consider it a replacement for a Paul. The relative styling is the only thing that's the same. It's definitely not a replacement for one of the higher end Pauls, BUT it is a good beginner instrument. Like all the lower end instruments they can be hit and miss, so it's definitely something I would try to play in the store and find one that I love. Don't trade that for discount pricing online. All that said, is this a first instrument or an addition to your arsenal?

Members LP50
How are the epiphones the Les paul Jr. and Les Paul specialII? I've got a Epi Les Paul Special, and honestly it's a pretty neat little guitar. I've had mine for 10 years, and got it to drag to lessons and stuff so my LP wouldn't get beat up. I like the neck on it a lot - almost better than my LP. It's nice and thin, and the guitar plays pretty well. I'd definitely buy another for fun. I'm actually thinking about buying another just to practice guitar repair and stuff on it.

Mine is Ash (Highway 1 Texas Telecaster), but I can't tell how many pieces. No seams across the face or back, but I cannot see if it is layered. Members GASSER
if you are cool with telecasters, id scope out the squier affinity tele. Hepnotic.... that really IS a beauty. I know you've done a couple appearance mods to make it better but the grain on yours was really nice to start with. Did you hand pick that one from a store, or did you just get really lucky with an online buy?
Members MDLMUSIC
Dean Vendetta XM or Fender Squier 51. Both $99 or less, brand new. Both great values for the money. I own both and gig with them regularly.

I don't think the grain is so much a luck thing... every one of those Squiers I've seen in the store has looked great with nice grain.

Members dabbler
How about: http://www.rondomusic.net/gg1jr.htmlhttp://www.rondomusic.net/gg1cla.html http://www.rondomusic.net/ky1ce24tb.htmlhttp://www.rondomusic.net/gg1ltd2.htmlhttp://www.rondomusic.net/wd230.html You weren't specific enough on what kind of tone, style of music you're playing, but let me say that in this price range quality can always vary. I have a SX GG1 STD (similar to the GG1 classic above but with covered pups that looks like this: http://www.rondomusic.net/photos/electric/gg1stdmhna1.jpg and I got it from Rondo for $99 on sale, normally it is $139, but it looks like Rondo is out of stock right now). As you can see, I have bought a few guitars fron Rondo. I only have a Douglas bass, but let me just say that my experience is that you often get more than you'd expect for the money. Even if you replace the tuners (the SX weak point, they work, they just aren't always smooth and aren't high ratio) have to do a fret level (also sometimes, not always necessary on SXes), you often get a playable guitar that you can take your time upgrading. Just food for thought.
Members book_of_lies777
my $149 Epi LP Spec II kicks ass, as does my $99 Squier Affinity Tele: just play a few first to make sure you get a good one - since wood is a natural thing, there's always gonna be some variation. Members curseoftruth
That looks hot!! A freind of mine bought that Dean Vendetta and was not really impressed, but its fine for $99. He is going to upgrade everything over time as he can afford it. It had sharp frets as well. The Squier 51 is much more toneful. I do like the Epi LP Junior with the dogear P90. Great neck on thoe things and I think they sound much better the Epi Lp Special with buckers.
Members IRG
I am pissed that this guitar looks nicer than my $800 Highway 1 Tele.It looks like swamp ash to me! Is it? Is it one piece? I have a Highway 1 Tele too, and have played these Squier Teles. Trust me, the Squires may look nice in photos, but playability wise, they aren't in the same league as the Highway 1. Neck on the Highway 1 are much nice, as is the hardware. The Squier's can be made to be nice performers though, and are a good platform to mod. But imo the Highway 1's are a much better guitar overall.

I'm not a handy modder guy. I had a Dean $99 Evo. It's the only guitar I felt I had to get rid of. I've heard that some folks here have had good experiences with the lower end Deans, so maybe I got a lemon. In fact a fellow on this thread gigs with his Vendetta regularly. I had tuneage issues and screws kept coming out of the wood. Probably stuff that could easily have ben upgraded. However, those pups rocked. I really liked the tone of the Evo! Members Cletus Spuckle
That looks hot!! I've had it for about a month and I'm really happy with it. It's made of a basswood body, string-through, and a big maple neck. I replaced the pickups with chrome Dream 90's and cream pup rings. It was almost ready to play out of the box with nice even smooth frets.

Members V-Type
For $150 and under new there are quite a few pretty cheap options. The lower end Agiles,SX's,etc knowing they need a few tweaks and also the Dean's the Squires, Music Yo-Kramers,Epi's specials and B stocks and the like from other mfgs. Just dont expect a LP or Strat killer but rather a good useable(in most cases) guitar and with the regular upgrades could be a real sleeper. Im tempted to get a plank Kramer just for kicks.http://www.musicyo.com/product_specs.asp?pf_id=
Members webwarmiller
http://www.musician.com/product/Drive-WildFire-X3-Electric-Guitar?sku=513459 Get it in Cherry sunburst.
