OK, so he's got about a hundred guitars. Or on average, each one gets played for 30 hours a year...assuming he never sleeps.

There's an amazing lack of variety in that accumulation of instruments, too. A hundred guitars and only one archtop. One lame ass short scale Rick. The only twelve string is a Gibson double neck. No Gretsch. Only one electric semihollowbody, and no fully hollow electrics. No Jazzmaster, no Jaguar. Really, other than the Rick, there's nothing non-Gibson or Fender on the electric side.

I've got more variety in my handful of instruments.

Fellers, don't get yer panties in a bunch over this. A buddy used to be a road manager for seveal big time acts in the 70's and early 80's. Guitar companies were always giving them gear (the band) so they could say that xxxxx uses our stuff. Prolly the reason for the lack of variation

Don't worry guys... your peepees will get bigger eventually and in all honesty, talking smack about John Mayer's guitar collection will likely do NOTHING to remedy the situation.

I think if I won the lottery or my rich uncle died and over the course of 5 years, I bought a million dollars with of guitars, I'd probably end up with about 60 strats, 10 Les Pauls and 20 total others including a hollow bodies, acoustics, Gretschs, funky one-offs etc...

I dig strats. I play strats. Why would I not buy strats? :idk:

I wonder if there's a car forum somewhere with people hating on Jerry Seinfield because he mostly owns Porsches? Are there guys saying, 'Well... I only own 5 cars and one is a Ford and one is Dodge Caravan. Jerry doesn't even have a Caravan!''

I just don't get the hate.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that if you could check out Rick Nielson's guitars, there are a lot of quirky Hamers. If you could check out Michael or Rudolph Schenker's collections, there'd be a lot of black and white Vs. If you could check out Yngwie's collection, there'd be a lot of strats.

Why would someone NOT buy the guitars they prefer?

Just to clarify...

The list is NOT John Mayer's list, (although I'm sure he has a big list)...

It's a list of a guy on the John Mayer forum... right?

I agree with the lack of diversity on the list... but hey, it's his money, so he gets to have what he wants...

Bbreaker's list would be more diverse I suppose, and about 50% longer.

I'm sure there are others here with impressive lists as well.

I don't get the people with lots and lots of "one thing"... but that's ok by me!

Of course... PICS or the list isn't real, right?

I don't think
ANYONE
here thinks they have too many guitars. Their wives, on the other hand, may disagree...
:p

I do, but mainly coz I don't have room to keep them in my crappy little house (and I don't even have that many). :o

But I'm sure if this guy can afford to have that kind of collection, he most likely doesn't suffer from having too little space in his house to keep them. :o

I hear ya, man. I recently made a spreadsheet and it was... humbling. Actually, it kinda pissed me off. I only have about 1/8th of your collection and yours are nicer on average, but I have way too much equipment... and I'm a modding fiend. I've bought three guitars just to have something to put a given set of pickups in.

I told myself I wasn't going to buy anything new at all, then I won a Warmoth neck on the 'bay trying to keep up with the Doc Morbiuses of the world.

Damn pretty Warmoth necks. :mad::lol:

It's been about a month since I bought anything.
