You know...songs you worked up because you were just CERTAIN they would kill and they wound up in the dustbin instead...

I mentioned in another thread this happened to me with "The Stroke". An even bigger fail that I was certain would kill was "Centerfold". Both were songs I thought chicks would dig and they would pack the dance floor and sing along to only to find out....not so much!

Recently... our medley of Hungry like the wolf/Rio by Duran Duran. We all thought it was going to work... It didn't. I swear someone threw a flaming {censored} bomb on the dance floor cuz the whole crowd scattered.

They scattered off the dance floor and out the door for a smoke so fast it was amost funny.

"Crazy Train" was definitely a shocker for me. The intro gets everyone fired up, but by the time we get to the second verse, we're playing to crickets. I don't think the average 25 year old has ever heard the song except for the intro... :poke:

we got a request for this at the last casino gig we did. We said sorry, we don't know it. Kind of strange it came from a young girl who looked maybe 22.

I think this is the 1st band I don't do crazy train with since High school. We have talked about it but none of the guys think it will work. I have to agree, with us any more we don't really attract the crowd that would love it.

faith by george michael. maybe not that EPIC but I really thought it would've worked better. Althought I would say that it wasn't our strongest song by far (never felt like we were nailing it)

maybe a few more years need to pass before you can play faith and have the crowd go crazy for it. Maybe that will never happen. :idk:

I remember when the limp bizkit version came out and every rock cover band was playing it , the place used to explode. That and "break stuff"

My previous band had the dance floor packed the entire first set (something we were not used to). Played "Yellow" by Coldplay - I think it was used in a soundtrack for some movie at th etime.

Well, the song immediately cleared the dance floor and it was empty for the rest of the set.

We never played it again.

I can't see STROKE doing anything but bombing. But every time I've seen a cover band do CENTERFOLD well, it has been very well received.

LOL...yeah, well maybe doing it WELL might have helped!

Seriously, we did it fine, don't know why it failed. Still has be shaking my head.

As far as "The Stroke" goes, same thing. To my ears it's got all the same appealing characteristics of "Pour Some Sugar On Me"---similar tempo and groove, big huge drum beat, lots of suggestive lyrics to sing a long to, big fat guitar riffs. Yeah, it's a few years older and wasn't QUITE the hit (although it was pretty damn huge), but I'm not sure where the connection lacks. Billy Squier's not as hip as Def Leppard? More young girls know "Sugar" from the "Bring It On" movie or something like that? Hard to call 'em all, that's all I know.

No matter....best not to think too hard on this stuff. Just learn it, play it and if it doesn't work...drop it! I've already spent more time talking about the song here than we ever did playing it, I think! :blah::blah::blah:

Well, at our gig this past Saturday, it was definitely Gary Numan "Cars." People cleared the dance floor and didn't come back until we played a song BY The Cars right after it ("Just What I Needed"). I love playing the song, but most of the time, the reaction is either bewilderment or outright disapproval. We may chuck it if this keeps happening, which I suspect it will.

I was glad they weren't too suspicious of us, though. "Fool me once, shame on you..." :D

Yeah, not a great dance tune and probably a bit more weird than fun for most people these days. Probably be better off with "Whip It" if you want to go down the early 80's synth-pop novelty song route.

We've been batting that one around at practice over the past few months. Been holding off on it, because I'm worried that the drum beat will tire the drummer out. But I think you're on the right track. I'll probably suggest to the boys that we should replace Cars with Whip It. More fun (the drummer and I trade off on the vocals) and definitely recognizable. Plus, I'm a huge Devo fan. :thu:

Yeah, I'd love to pull out something like "Girl U Want" or "Jerkin' Back and Forth", but I'm afraid nobody under 45 would know those songs anymore.

Back when I was 15-16, I made a mix tape of songs I wanted to do. It included tracks by Van Halen, Rush, Journey, The Cars and Devo. One of the tracks was "Beautiful World."

This was before I was even in a band, just songs I wanted to play live. No thought of what the audience wanted. :D

"dancing with myself"... was POSITIVE it would just KILL! we had it down really good too, nothing but crickets 4x in a row.. song got dropped.

Another rather disappointing one was "Sex on fire" by Kings of leon. We spent a lot of time getting that one solid, and it failed every time.

I've seen two other bands play it, and do it justice, with the same results.

I remember discussing these songs before and people telling me the songs kill in some markets, so I guess it's regional.

Conversely, we had cut "Use Somebody" from our set 4 months ago or so. Brought it back and it went over HUGE. I hardly had to sing, the crowd handled most of the tune themselves

We did it in my old band and I almost needed oxygen afterwards.

Saw a local band do that one the other night. Didn't sound half bad and people definitely danced to it. From that, I would conclude that it would work in this area.
