Members kmart
Don't you love that? Honestly I really really wish more places had a basic backline. It seemed somewhat common in NYC from what I remember... I would love that if it meant what it SHOULD: that the house kit is always in decent condition, reasonably maintained, etc. Occasionally, though, you'll run into the {censored}box kit that hasn't had it's heads changed in 10 years, hardware that's missing pieces and/or broken, etc.I tend not to play those kind of venues for multiple other reasons, but regardless; if it's a house kit gig, I still always bring snare drum, cymbals and a hardware case containing a kick pedal, snare stand, cymbal stand, extra boom arm and clamp, hihat stand and throne. The ONLY things I don't bring are kick drum, toms and additional cymbal stands.Better to be safe than miserable.

If its a place I've never played before and that I don't have a chance to scope out before hand, we will bring EVERYTHING including our full PA to the show regardless of what they say they have. I've just had too many situations where the club says they have one thing, but when you arrive, its completely different.

I'll usually bring my own snare and kick pedal too. You know, it's funny though, after 15 years of gigging, I sort of don't care anymore about the quality/condition of house kits. Out front drums never sound anything like they do onstage anyhow. I just sort of expect a {censored}ty, poorly tuned kit and if I get better, hey, it's a bonus. The only things I truly care about are a)the seat needs to be adjustable to more or less my usual height b)the kick pedal needs to feel right to me amd c)the kick drum needs to stay put. Give me those and I'll play damn near anything without complaining.
Members kmart
Out front drums never sound anything like they do onstage anyhow. While this is true, there is a point of diminishing returns with how terribly destroyed a head is and how likely you may be to get a salvageable tone out of it. The worse scenarios I've seen, you couldn't make it sound anything different than hitting a box.

But hey, with a little care you could mic and EQ an actual box and it would work as a drum. Actually it might sound better than some house kits! Members wheresgrant3
Had a gig last night... a rare Thursday night gig to kick off the weekend. Modest crowd but the gig was outdoors and the night was beautiful. We have an annual private party that we are playing on Saturday that is a blast. Lot's of kids and familes... which is great. Kids are the most appreciative crowd you can play for and they always make you feel like a rock star. Here's a clip from last year's party Wild Bill's 4th Party The organizer is well off (lottery winnings) and out does himself each year. This year there is 'supposed' to be a special appearance by someone who is well known. I won't say the name or release the identity until I have that person on video performing with the band. Members Dancebass
This weekend is super lame here in Atlanta. No one I know is playing anywhere. The city needs revenue and the 4th of July weekend is a DUI shooting gallery. All of my friends are hitting the liquor store on the way home this afternoon then hiding away till it's safe to come out again on Tuesday. The cops got an early start cracking skulls since Wednesday afternoon. You can't drive a mile of interstate here in town without seeing someone pulled over dancing on one leg. Members chemikool
exactly... If I bring PA AND play drums it better be Jessica Alba's bachelerorette party This To the OP; my musical weekend: 1) Bar band last night (3rd song in we had LINE DANCERS and it was rock and roll damn I wish I woulda had the camera out...it was surreal) 2) Off tonight and spending LOTS of time with the MRS *cue cheesy 70s mustache porno music* 3) Private party fundraiser thingy for the rich folk early Saturday night 4) Early outdoor 4th of July (on the 3rd) party Sunday afternoon (I just talked to the sound guy for this one and he's bringing 16 subs and a line array...it's gonna be loud Sunday afternoon!) Heading to Guantanamo Bay Cuba to play for the troops! Second time down and can't wait to get back. That is too cool! One of my bands has been asked to play for the troops and we're kicking it around...we all have jobs and they want us to take a lot of time off to do it AND leave the country. What is the right move here? Do we bring up the money we're losing from our jobs? Or do ya'll think that is douchey?
Members Crustee
Aside from Halloween, we generally try to avoid holiday weekend gigs. Have two on the same day next Saturday. A festival slot at 11 AM, then a gig down the beach that night.
Moderators BATCAT Posted July 1, 2011 Moderators Share Posted July 1, 2011 I'm kinda relieved- we can walk our gear to the gig on the 3rd.
Members kmart
Aside from Halloween, we generally try to avoid holiday weekend gigs. It's been hit and miss for me over the years, but Halloween and NYE are the only 2 real holiday gigs I'm interested in.Around here, it's wiser to try and lay low and let the amateurs & idiots have run of things for a couple days. We're off this weekend, but my side-gig is doing a Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club fest next weekend...It should be...interesting; we're a Clash covers band sharing the stage with a Dio-era Sabbath tribute (Called Heaven & Hell, but no, not THAT one obviously) and a Zep tribute??? Members badhabit
Playing the Vacaville Blues Festival on Saturday and The Red, White and Blues Festival on Monday. Backline is provided, as is a full PA. But I'll bring my own amp and pedals. Last festival provided some Fender Twin Reverb Re-issues, which aren't a bad amp, but they're not like my FUCHS. Members Vito Corleone
Playing the Vacaville Blues Festival on Saturday We're playing the Creekwalk there at the end of the month. I wonder if it will be the same PA?
Members badhabit
As I understand it, it is a moderate JBL PRX500 setup. If you're playing in the park, the PA will probably be different.
Members cree
We are playing a local bar/pub tonight and an outdoor 4th of July celebration on Monday night. I am not sure how the holiday weekend will affect the crowd tonight.

Members bish0p34
Sadly, I'm not playing out this weekend. After a few weeks of not being in a band I'm going crazy! Hope everyone has some great gigs this weekend...
Members bnelly428
From what I hear, the clubs and bars around here were pretty barren compared to a normal non-holiday non long weekend. Looks like my gamble paid off!

Members jeff42
my trio played a great 9pm-midnight gig on Friday. It went very well. It got even better after midnight cuz we stopped playing and drank like crazy with the people at the bar!

Members Vermoulian
I guy I played with for a while back in '08 asked me to do a one-off show with him at an indie music festival on Sunday. It was a pretty fun blast from the past. He plays a kind of folk-punk that's very different from anything I do in other bands right now. It was fun to plug into that indie/underground/DIY punk community again.
