Members Taylor704
Basically, i'm off to university in Southampton soon and want a new guitar as a last present before money gets tight. My desire for a semi-hollow has reached ridiculous levels. In terms of sound, i'm looking for something hotter than my Telecaster but not too dark, hence why i've been looking at P-90 equipped guitars and mini humbuckers. The "frequensator" bridge on the Riviera interests me, is it an easy thing to restring? I've read someone complaining that their favourite brand of strings wasn't long enough on the lower strings. Budget wise, i've got around
Members Fender&EHX4ever
I've never been crazy about the cutaway contours of the Dot. Those ears are just too fat and nubby for my taste. So that would narrow it down to the Sheraton or Riviera for me.
Members RadioSilence
check out Peerless guitars, they used to make Epis when they were made in Korea, and are still putting out (basically) the same designs under their own name. http://www.peerlessguitars.eu/#/electric/4544402042

Members mhuxtable
they Sheraton has a nice feel to it & the appointments are nice. The pickups are a bit lacking though...and the electronics are shoddy. The Dot is even worse. That said, once I gave my Sheraton new pickups, switch, jack, pots, wiring, it was awesome. Members orourke
From my experience the Sheraton feels a lot more expensive then the Dot. Sounds better too.
Members companyman
I really dig my new Dot Studio, mine has a FAT neck, which I love, but may not be for everyone. The worn finish is not my favorite, but I am going to polish it to a medium shine soon. The sound is what I love about it, the pickups sound good to me, but they have to be set lowered to get them to open up and not compress too much and sound muddy. The electronics work great, the tone knob is very responsive from 0-10. This is a lot of guitar for really cheap!

Members jkokura
I have a Dot that was much improved when I replaced the pickups and electronics. I have played sheratons and rivieras fairly extensively. They have their benefits I'm sure, but I don't regret getting the Dot and modding it to my taste. I think the Dot makes a better platform for 'improving' than the other two. If you're into trying different pickups and such, I would suggest going for the Dot, and I believe it's the least expensive of the three you've quoted. I got mine used for 375 Canadian... Members slushpup96
If you're looking to buy a Riviera, hit me up in the private messaging system. I would go with either the Riviera or the Sheraton over the Dot. Epi dots feel a bit cheap to me compared to the other two, and Sheraton's sound a bit less full to me, if you know what I mean. That's all my opinion though.

Members Taylor704
Cheers for the advice guys. Pickups wise, what are people's opinions on mini-humbuckers, in this case from the Riviera? Tone wise, i'm looking for something to compliment the single coils in my Tele with a "beefier" (I hate using that word) tone, but not overly dark like some semi/full hollow guitars have. Possibly looking at replacing the pickups in a Dot/Sheraton if I buy one. I was so close to bidding on a Riviera about 10 miles away from me, but my reluctant to eBay buy got the better of me. Members krish
I loved my sheraton when I had it, but stock I personally found it to be quite dark, a little too dark for my tastes. I'm sure pickup + electronics changes would have changed that though. All three guitars are very well constructed, but benefit massively from hardware upgrades. Members t_e_l_e
hmmm... i want a semihollow, and i also want a guitar with p90s and i'm lefty...a dot is available new and the price is reasonable, what would you think about putting p90's in it? which one? would they fit or leave a hole if placed where normally full sized humbuckers used to be? I'd go for HB sized P90's. Axes R Us do a cheap, but nice sounding, line of retrofit-HB sized 90's. If you've never changed the pickups on a semi/hollowbody, prepare to swear a lot. Were Iyou, i'd pay someone else to do it, but I am very lazy and i've done it so many times before I do not want to do it again. Alternatively - save/wait for an Epi Valensi model like the dude in your avvy, or get a Riviera with the mini hums. Or get a Casino or Peerless Songbird. It sounds to me like you're not a humbucker fan. As for frequensators - "most" string brands are long enough. What type do you use? Rotosounds are long enough. Ernie Balls are not. Members pepperduck
With Epiphone it all depends. My Dot plays much better than any Riviera or Sheraton that I've tried. I've also played many a Dot that felt horrendous. IMHO though all Epis need an electronics swap. They are pretty much mud factories. All in all the best thing to is to make up your mind about the one you find the most aesthetically pleasing and then find one that plays well. Also lets not forget the fact that just about any guitar you buy should get set up to your liking.
