Members 100 watt
I use old school marshalls. With stuff up front, it's still hard to mask mistakes / sloppy playing. I normally only have on 1-2 effects at a time. A dirt pedal, and either a wah, or a "color" pedal (phaer, flange, etc) . Once in a blue moon I'll use a delay
Members tedmich
Who. .... Wat ... um. Huh? guitarist for:Dictatorshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_DictatorsManowarhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manowar Eklundh uses the phrase "growing your own mustache" which I take to mean finding your own unique voice and sound and in his case this is entirely through his playing technique and NOT effects, which by extension of the analogy are an adolescent crutch to the actual PLAYING; boys can't grow their own mustache. Members guitarbilly74
I play that way now, guitar>cable>amp. Back in the days I ran rack(s) and floor effects at times but not any longer. The day my last rack processor re-set itself was a great day (15 years ago) as it forced to improve my technical abilities, not hiding behind layers of effects the way that Eric Johnson does or Shawn Lane did. If I need anything a floor OD pedal, a rotary pedal, and a compressor is all I own any longer. Derek do you REALLY think these guys are hiding behind effects? These guys are monster players who could play straight into an amp and sound much better than all of us combined. They use effects because they want to, not to hide anything. Members superflyinmonke
I'm using a Turbo-Tuner and a Decimator. Sometimes when I have both amps going, I use my Radial A/B/Y. I owned a boost once, but never used it.

Members guitarbilly74
So for the guys who are actually playing straight through the amp... do you guys play primarily rhythm or lead in your band? I always feel that I'd have no problems playing straight through the amp if I was playing strictly rhythm guitar, but I have a hard time to find a dry solo tone I like. A) He did NOT mean Frosted Flakes or Super Sugar CrispB) He did also mean all the other spices, marinades, sauces too. C) It does include the salts and additives in your Spaghetti-Ohs. Members Stevetemp
Too bad we did not ask for clips of everyone. And how much better they are NOT "hiding behind effects". LOL. Ah but it's cool. Like Anomaly says.... we all get our grove on as we see fit.
Members crimson on pink
Minus one song that needs delay and another that I use to mode 7 on my ps3 to thicken the chorus up, I do. I work the volume knob a bit tho thru the set to change it up a bit.

Members DeadNight Warrior
I turned up to a band practice once with my amp, cab, board, all the cables... and no guitar. Doesn't matter how simple I make it, I'm sure I could find a way to be a dumbcunt.
Members godofmetalguita
It depends on what I'm playing. In my band, no, the guitars need the boost to tighten up the low end and gate to clean it up.
Members telephant
I can and have but it's not as much fun. Plus with a band it's nice to boost for solo's and heavier rhythms.
Members Santuzzo
I only play straight through the amp if I play jazz (with a jazz box), but I will a bit reverb from the amp. For pretty much everything else I use some FX for leads, like some delay as well as for cleans.

I play straight through about 95% of the time. Occasionally I like to use a pedal. I play mainly rhythm but some lead stuff. My only effect is the on-board reverb which I use for rhythm and lead.
