Members undercool
Great build and finish work. If I may add my two cents- Speaking from experience, I would reinforce those joints. Ideally, those edge joints all need to be box joints, but they are a pain in the arse to get right (although it seems the ultimate set of tools would make it easy work! jealous!). I too use biscuit joinery on the butt joints, but they are NOT as strong as we hope. Esp w/ a 4x12 rocking around. Yes, the back and front add some great structural support (from racking while rocking), but some internal bracing is a good idea. My 2x12 (Avatar Vintage clone) has seen a LOT of moving around and beating on - and I've had no issues. Just simple 1.5x1.5 inch screwed into the two corner surfaces w/ glue adds a TON of support. If I can find the pics of my build, I'll post. Anyway, hope thats useful. Again- INSPIRINGLY good build. Fantastic work. J

J ^ good advice- here is my first build and how I did my joints- I didn't use biscuits, I did this interlocking thing that so far (3 years +) has held up very well through all kinds of gigging- what my reinforce pic doesn't show is the extra screws and glue I put in from the outside into the bracing block on both ends...it is crazy sturdy and really solid as a rock-...that being said, excellent job! I wish I had your resources...I did mine with a circular saw, a jigsaw and a dremel- my next cab (this summer) will be done using box joints...it's a fun project for those that are considering doing it-
Members Slaymoar
Speaking from experience, I would reinforce those joints. +1. All the work you put into it, might as well get the sound out of it. If you want your amp to sound like a monster, do yourself a favor and reinforce every inch where woods meet. Use wood glue and screws. If you want to do it right, use some in at the centers as well, and use a center baffle brace. Way to measure how well you cab is constructed, max the bass on your amp and turn it up until it starts farting, then dial back a little. Place your hand on various parts of the cab centers (back panel, sides, top). It shouldnt vibrate much to the low bass sounds. A well constructed cab will vibrate VERY LITTLE. Proceed to bracing it, like mentioned. The effect will be greater if you also seal your cab airtight*. Once you finish bracing/sealing, do the same thing with your amp. This time you will notice you can add more bass before it farts out, AND it will vibrate much less when you place your hand on it. Also, you will notice a volume increase. -D
Members theDogger
I have to say that DYNAMAT really help absorb the unwanted back wave. I hear ya when you talk about construction. Remember I did a lot of custom car audio install and I am not talking about your local Best Buy Crap! I'll try and snap some shots of the inside now with all the wiring! Also I went through and sealed all the joints.... I also have to say I just got the MTM2 and but some ZW EMG's in with the 18 volt mod.....WOW! It is much cleaner, heavier and chuncker than just the 9 volt. Also if someone can give me a quick tutorial on how to ger a decent recording in the PC I would be happy to upload some video! I am not to sold on the Hellatone 60L though. I have 1-more G12T-75 I might pick 1 more up and make all 4 speakers the same. The HT 60L's are too much mid-range.....I am going to swap 2 of the speakers into an X pattern and see if that smooths things out. Right now I am enjoying playing only the 2-G12T-75's theDogger

Members theDogger
Here are some shots of the 2x12 that I just finished and the stripped 4x12 A little fun with the 4x12 plate I stripped the old 4x12 down to recover it and recess the handles and rear plate. As my skills tolexing have gotten a lot better. I will be finishing this up in the next week I'll post pics of the re-tolexing. Time I can build one of these in two weekend with about 5 hrs per day As far as cost. I by all of my accessories from two places. https://www.tubesandmore.com/ (best on shipping cost cheap) http://www.speakerbuildersupply.com/default.asp (most all the hardware call them to get a better shipping price) Plywood - $38.00 (1 4x8 sheet can make 1-4x12 or 2x12 and a 1x12) Tolex - $14 per yard you need 4 yrds to cover a 4x12 and 2 to cover a 2x12. I buy from here becasue the role is 54" not 36" Effectivally you can buy the 4 yards and split it and cove a 4x12 and a 2x12 (https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/grill_cloth_tolex_piping?filters=Brand%3DMesa) Grill Cloth - $26.50 sold per yard so 2 yards to cover the 4x12 and 2x12 https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/S-G471 Piping .95 https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/S-GP004 Marshall front Corners $8.00 https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/P-H1091 Marshall Rear Corners $8.00 https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/P-H1090 Rubber Feet $6.00 https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/P-H9300 Side handles $16 for 4x12 $12 for 2x12 http://www.speakerbuildersupply.com/speaker-cabinet-steel-bar-handle-p/sbh100.htm Jack Dish $10 w/ switchcraft - http://www.speakerbuildersupply.com/product-p/jdsqq.htm Speaker mounting kits $3.30 http://www.speakerbuildersupply.com/product-p/mstnk.htm think that's everything and some misc. stuff that you get at HomeDepo Weldwood Contact Cement $15 1 5/8" black wood screws So about $225 then I look for speakers on ebay or WGS in there b-stock But overall a lot less than an actual Marshall or Mesa in the end theDogger
Members AJ6stringsting
Thought that I would post my DIY build of a Marshall Slant 1960 4x12. Here is the PDF of the plans that I followed. I used Baltic Birch 13 ply voidless sheets. (I am also looking for some Marshall 1936 2x12 plans. Have enough wood to build a 2nd cab). I will up date the thread as I move along. I should mention that I am fortunate enough to have access to a master cabinet builder. My brother-in-law's father-in-law. The guy is just plain awesome. He has done most of the cutting and is assisting in the assembly. (Keeps telling me the assembly is monkeys work ) Here is my build sheet: Gear_Build Input 1 - 8 Ohm (2-Greenbacks) Input 2 - 8 Ohm (2-G12T) Input 3 - 16 Ohm (all 4 speakers) Good cab wiring info here http://www.jumbosunshade.com/ezine/swd4.htm the cab joints will be held together with biscuits. Here is are some shot of the first days build.. More to come... theDogger Looking at your shop, takes me back to the days of working in a cabinet shop. Spent many of my lunch hour, making guitar bodies for future use. Nice build and shop !!!!
Members WRGKMC
Then you'd have to add in the labor time and whatever speakers you'd choose. I bought my Marshall slant 1960 with 4 Celection 75's for $450 at a guitar center used. I suppose if you used the same speakers yours would actually cost quite a bit more especially if you add in the labor time. The grill cloth on mine was that crappy burlap stuff that they used that year so I spend another $25 for some Marshall Checkered cloth and just replaced it. Its a great cab for the price but deals like that don't come along every day.
Members theDogger
True but its more of a Labor of Love doing this work, I have since made about a total of 10 and have sold them unloaded and they are loving them. theDogger
