Members rasputin1963
Oh, I lu-u-u-urve this record always have. How cool and fine is the gentle boogaloo groove/rhythm set up by the drummer, with those delicious flams?

Members Jimbroni
I'm listening to the Os Mutantes right now. They had some really great 60's style basslines. Actually they had alot of great everything. 60's TV show type music + the beatles + samba = crazy beautiful.

Phil O'Keefe
Oh, I lu-u-u-urve this record always have. How cool and fine is the gentle boogaloo groove/rhythm set up by the drummer, with those delicious flams? I've always loved that song too - but I probably haven't heard it for over 25 years. Yet when we were playing it back,, my wife and I were singing along like it was still fresh on the charts. What year was that released, and do you know any more about who played on it, where it was waxed, etc? That's a great bass line... :phil:

Moderators Lee Knight Posted March 5, 2009 Moderators Share Posted March 5, 2009 Phil, that Dusty track is great. I love the roomy quality to it. A lot of my examples have a more direct sound. Not meaning they were DI recordings, but that they included less room sound. This Springfield thing is all room bloom. I love that.

Phil O'Keefe
A much simpler bass line, but quite possibly, the sexiest female vocal performance ever waxed. a28kY1-s-Vc

Moderators Lee Knight Posted March 5, 2009 Moderators Share Posted March 5, 2009 I play this all the time. I love her voice against the perc and sax. It is the perfect vocal performance and vocal recording. So much so that I've never even paid attention to the bass on it.
Phil O'Keefe
It's one of Bacharach / David's best songs IMHO, and Dusty just NAILED the performance. IIRC, that's a Phil Ramone production...
Members Ethan Winer
Here's one that's all tonic but check the way the bass drives the chorus. It's not just 1/4s. Speaking of The Monkees, I'd kill to know who played the bass on Pleasant Valley Sunday. --Ethan

Members Richard King
A much simpler bass line, but quite possibly, the sexiest female vocal performance ever waxed. I wish I could find a link, but it CAN'T be sexier than this (at the time) young lady's rendition of the same song. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudine_Longet
Members Ethan Winer
I believe that was Chip Douglas. It is a great bassline. Wow, awesome! A few Google links seems to confirm this. I can't believe I never even heard of him. And the Turtles too. Cool. Thanks! --Ethan

IIRC, that's a Phil Ramone production...Actually, consulting my Dusty box set... This sounds like the version featured in "Casino Royale", which was produced by Bachrach himself. An alternate version (HEAVILY reverb'd) was done by Johnny Franz, A&R director for Philips Records, who's listed as Producer on almost everything up to "Dusty in Memphis"."Dusty in Memphis" btw, should be in everyone's record collection -- no exceptions! Phil O'Keefe
According to the site below it was James Jamerson http://www.philbrodieband.com/muso_james_jamerson_discography.htm I always thought it was James, but because of the year of release (1973) corresponding with his split from Motown, I've never been certain, and until now I have never seen any confirmation that it was indeed him. Thanks for the link Richard - I really appreciate it! Members Jimbroni
Yeah thanks for that link. I found this in the Album section. 1976 Donald Byrd Caricatures * I wonder if James plays on the whole thing? Either way Donald is one of the hometown heroes, the possibility of him and Jamerson working together Oh man. Gotta go its research time.
