Ok, hell yeah, i'm down for this. i'll be hones too.

today, i'm going to practice no less then 3 hours!

I'm going to work on my theory and technique at the same time, by taking the major scale, and figuring out every arpgeggio in it, and then learning to play it, then i'm going to practice them all till i can play them smoothly.

then, i'm gonna learn the major scale and all it's modes in 3 places in 3 different keys.. D, E, and F# hmm.. yeah anyway, i'm gonna practice for 3 hours

We'll see if I can tough it out or maybe i'll just end up jerking off for 3 hours.

I appologize for each day without an update. :cop:

However, I've spent that time doing the right thing,

and I've played constructively for at least 2 hours each day.

Apart from work on scales, patterns & variations and arpeggios,

which are part of my everyday diet,

I've created a list of solos I will transcribe, and began

sweating over Mike Stern's "Play". Scofield's solo on that

track is great too, so I guess I will do it as well.

Here's the partial list:

Scofield & Stern - Play

Stern - Oleo

Scofield - Wee

Martino - Four on Six

Goodrick - Well You Needn't

Scofield & Abercrombie - Solar

Hall & Frisell - All the things you are (today's addition :) )

There is also a theme and a riff brewing in my head

as it usually happens after a long time spent practicing

and fiddling with the guitar.

Played electric up on the hill for the foam animals, then worked on acoustic

the rest of the day. Since, I've been posting the progress of this original

"Friendly Skies" here's what it sounds like with my teacher showing me how

she would sing it. Just the first verse, but you get the idea. I might actually

be on to a good song here.

I'm committing myself right here on this thread to making a good song.

"Good" is subjective, but I mean something you can't call "bad". I'm learning

that you have to be committed completely to making music. You must do it

like you mean it.

Playing music is like kicking somebody in the balls. If you are not committed to the act, you are fail.

Right here, right now I say I will not fail. By the Union Jack hiding under my bed I pledge this.

Last night, despite my pedal power supply breaing down on me...I practiced for an hour....actually it had been a long time since I went straight into the amp so it worked out.

20 minutes scales

20 minutes working on some timing issues

20 minutes of playing along to backing tracks and trying to slide more smoothly into the leads...

I've been working on learning to read music/sight read for my classical guitar class. I've been getting at least 45 minutes in a day. I didn't get a lot done over the weekend other than some noodling. My practices seem to lose structure when I'm playing my electric. I really need a routine to help me progress.

The more I practice, the more I discover that playing well is hard work. Don't put in the work, don't play well. That simple.

Agree 100%. I've slowed down a bit (around 30 mins daily right now) due to the end of semester nonsense going on, but I'm working my butt off over that 30 min :thu:

Played my acoustic last night for an hour. Much more difficult to keep things clean and smooth after playing my electrics for several weeks....

1. Scales

2. Songs with complex chord voicing

3. Alternate picking and "speed" work

Everything is going well.

I find it easier to post an update every 3-4 days, because

I generally forget my duty :). But the practicing is going unhindered.

Well over 2hrs per day, and two solo transcriptions that are going

really well: Mike Stern's "Play" (although he gets crazy fast in a couple

of spots, that really bums me out) and Scott Henderson's "Dolemite."

I might post rudimentary tabs once I put them on "paper."

Oh, and I've discovered a real fine way to play fast chords & rhythm

with the Jazz III pick: I just rotate it sideways - the side works great for me.

Slides over the strings effortlessly.

My girlfriend says I've improved a lot in the past four months. Maybe she's right, I dunno, but I have been working a lot on my playing. After I posted that video here on EG, I got tons of feedback and great advice that I'm gonna keep in mind next time I do a video. Really helpful stuff.

Right now I'm working on more interesting ways of playing fast. Instead of just doing straight scales, I'm gonna take Shawn Lane's advice and mix up various rhythmic groupings. So now I'm trying to mix 4's and 6's, which is pretty simple, but doing groups of 5 proves to be just about as hard as I expected. It's all alternate picked, which explains why it's such a pain in the ass.

I will get it down, because I know I'm good enough. Just takes some time...

I'm back !

So, today I practiced for about 2 hours so far. Mostly technical scale exercises, alternate picking.

I will still do about 45min-1h of legato exercises.

But first I need a little break and a strong coffee !:thu:

Well I am still at it practicing daily

It is a mixed deal though, I am still loving it But it is aggrivating wishing my play will become more seamless.......I get the mechanics of the songs down well, I know the finger positionings I need so far but it is still finger this chord and my fingers go fairly quickly and with out akwardness play then a pause as i reposition, and play again so the momentum and continuity of the music is not as it should be......teacher still singing praise reasurres me do not worry it will click and happen, just wish it would hurry and happen Yet I know it will just take lots more practice, I think now my hands no where to go but my brain is not trusting it yet, it makes me pause and look or pause and think is that right instead of flowing.......Guess I better keep at it some more to hopefully click and have it happen the rest of the way!

Got a takedown finished for vocal solo accompaniment over the last week. Lot's of classical fills, etc played on my hollowbody blended with piezo. Should be fun. We debut it tonight.

OT: I just found out today our department chair moved 20 pages of paper up a week to tomorrow and Thursday. Joy.

Something tells me I will not be practicing much over the next few days...
