Moderators BATCAT Posted August 27, 2012 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2012 There's been a lot of discussion of songlists for cover bands and I thought a glimpse into the cover selections of original bands might be interesting... what songs do you currently cover or have you covered as part of a mostly-original set? Members rhino55
Typically we do traditional kinds of things, anything from I'll Fly Away to Midnight Special some not as traditional things Ophelia - The BandShe Caught the Katy - Taj Mahal Signed Sealed Delivered - Stevie Wonder Never Tear Us Apart - INXSDon't Carry it All - The Decemberist Looking at that, it sort of looks like we are all over the place, and I guess we are, but it makes sense in context. Members FitchFY
In my original bands, when we've done covers, it's always been for one of two reasons: we could either put a really cool twist on it or just nail it in style. For example... In my hard rock band of five years, we nailed tunes like: Muse - Stockholm Syndrome Alter Bridge - Blackbird Killswitch Engage - End of Heartache Avenged Sevefold - Bat Country We "hard rock'd" versions of: Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl Katy Perry - I Kissed a Girl In different bands, I've also done: The Who - The Seeker (Done with a funky hip-hop groove) Steely Dan - Any Major Dude (with almost tribal-esque drums) Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me (power trio-style) It all comes down to knowing your band, knowing your crowd, and knowing if it actually sounds good. Members FitchFY
Something that always goes over well for bands is playing an already re-worked cover of a tune. I've done that quite a few times: Foo Fighters doing "Have a Cigar" by Pink FloydRa doing "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" by The PoliceDisturbed doing "Land of Confusion" by GenesisReel Big Fish doing "Take On Me" by A-HaNonpoint doing "In the Air Tonight" by Phil CollinsSave Ferris doing "Come On Eileen" by Dexy and the Midnight RunnersLimp Bizkit doing "Faith" by George Michael The list goes on, but you get the point! Members Lee Flier
Between my 2 bands we've covered a lot of cool {censored}. "Lipstick Vogue" by Elvis Costello is one we really dig. "20th Century Man" by the Kinks. "Baby Loves to Rock" by Cheap Trick... I could go on for awhile. Oh, and one of my bands did this in the studio the other day before practice, basically for the hell of it and because we love the song. We've never attempted to play it live and I doubt we ever would, but it was a blast to record. [video=youtube;bCHXw7nqw2s]

Members Old Fart Rocker
For original shows, we usually throw in 1 cover that I sing to give our singer/bass a break for a song. Lately we've been doing Immigrant Song. Here's a clip: [video=youtube;syobOUr3IiQ]

Always admired this song for being such a huge hit while written around such a dissonent, "un-pop" chord pattern.

Members Flying_Milkman
Hendrix - Foxy LadyBeatles - Tomorrow Never KnowsBlur - Song 2 Hendrix and and Blur go over like nobodies business. Tomorrow we play occasionaly when we're playing to a more matured crowd. Sometime we throw Sittin on the Dock of the Bay in with a really crazy drum arrangement, that's always cool too.
