Guys in (mostly) original bands: what songs do you cover/have you covered?

There's been a lot of discussion of songlists for cover bands and I thought a glimpse into the cover selections of original bands might be interesting... what songs do you currently cover or have you covered as part of a mostly-original set?

Typically we do traditional kinds of things, anything from I'll Fly Away to Midnight Special

some not as traditional things

Ophelia - The Band

She Caught the Katy - Taj Mahal

Signed Sealed Delivered - Stevie Wonder

Never Tear Us Apart - INXS

Don't Carry it All - The Decemberist

Looking at that, it sort of looks like we are all over the place, and I guess we are, but it makes sense in context.

In my original bands, when we've done covers, it's always been for one of two reasons: we could either put a really cool twist on it or just nail it in style. For example...

In my hard rock band of five years, we nailed tunes like:

Muse - Stockholm Syndrome

Alter Bridge - Blackbird

Killswitch Engage - End of Heartache

Avenged Sevefold - Bat Country

We "hard rock'd" versions of:

Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night

Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl

Katy Perry - I Kissed a Girl

In different bands, I've also done:

The Who - The Seeker (Done with a funky hip-hop groove)

Steely Dan - Any Major Dude (with almost tribal-esque drums)

Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me (power trio-style)

It all comes down to knowing your band, knowing your crowd, and knowing if it actually sounds good. :)

The Smiths- Panic

The Kinks- Waterloo Sunset

Echo and the Bunnymen- Villiers Terrace

ABBA- Eagle

Madonna- Borderline

Joy Division- Isolation

Velvet Underground- What Goes On

Aztec Camera- Oblivious

Something that always goes over well for bands is playing an already re-worked cover of a tune. I've done that quite a few times:

Foo Fighters doing "Have a Cigar" by Pink Floyd

Ra doing "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" by The Police

Disturbed doing "Land of Confusion" by Genesis

Reel Big Fish doing "Take On Me" by A-Ha

Nonpoint doing "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins

Save Ferris doing "Come On Eileen" by Dexy and the Midnight Runners

Limp Bizkit doing "Faith" by George Michael

The list goes on, but you get the point!

Between my 2 bands we've covered a lot of cool {censored}. "Lipstick Vogue" by Elvis Costello is one we really dig. "20th Century Man" by the Kinks. "Baby Loves to Rock" by Cheap Trick... I could go on for awhile.

Oh, and one of my bands did this in the studio the other day before practice, basically for the hell of it and because we love the song. We've never attempted to play it live and I doubt we ever would, but it was a blast to record.

We try to do covers that complement our originals, with some more suited than others:

Windfall - SonVolt

16 Days - WhiskeyTown

Box Full of Letters - Wilco

Hurricane - Bob Dylan

Better Things - The Kinks

Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers

Let it Ride - Ryan Adams

Everybody Knows this is Nowhere - Neil Young

A Song for You - Gram Parsons

Ethylene - John Hiatt

Portland - The Replacements

And of course, Wagon Wheel - OCMS

You guys are frickin' great - I'd like to see all those played by your band.

Hendrix - Foxy Lady

Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows

Blur - Song 2

Hendrix and and Blur go over like nobodies business. Tomorrow we play occasionaly when we're playing to a more matured crowd. Sometime we throw Sittin on the Dock of the Bay in with a really crazy drum arrangement, that's always cool too.

We play these covers because we do them well and they complement the original material. At the moment our set is about 70% original/30% cover.

Inside Lookin' Out -- Grand Funk

Go to Hell -- Nashville {censored}

Wet Pussycat -- Unaida

I'm Gonna -- Pinky Tuscadaro's Whiteknuckle *******

The Money Will Roll Right In -- Fang
