Well the Germanium 4 isn't really a Big Muff and the Hoof is based off the Sovtek model. J Mascis uses the Ram's Head version quite a bit, so I'd get one based off of that. From my recollection, your best bets are: the BYOC Muff, the GeneralGuitarGadgets Muff, and the Stomp Under Foot Ram's Head. I'd pick the BYOC out of all of those since it offers various EQ shapes. I don't doubt the earplugs. I had the chance to talk with both J and Larry Crane last time J was in town. J said he mixes at very very low levels.
