Yeah but nobody actually uses it in lieu of socialising

I would say more people use it for organising actual contact than use it as an alternative

yeah, that and try posting a link to something funny (that all your mutual friends can see too) down the pub ;)

or even by email, unless you cc it to all of your friends.

I'm on facebook. Quite a lot actually, and I'm older than some here. My wife is on it a lot, and posts a lot more than I do. FOr a while I hated it, sort of thought it was a waste of time, but now I see lots of uses for it. Some of it is fun, keeping in touch with a lot of friends from high school, and since we're all ove the country/planet, I would never know what they're up to any other way. This way it's kinda fun to peek in to see what they doing once in a while. I delete those who I find annoying.

I also use it with coworkers, sometimes to keep touch this way, and I am launching a FB page for my office at CU, so there's a practical side of all of this too.

Overall it's fun, I don't spend gobs of time on it, just now and then.

I'm on Facebook quite a lot. 99% of my friends are people I know and hang out with, and I have a couple of people I've met through forums etc that I think are cool. I don't just add anyone. I find it fun to see what friends are up to, and a lot of my friends organise social things through Facebook. It's a lot easier posting "who fancies a drink tonight?" Than it is making 40 phone calls to people who might be interested in going for a drink.

Also, I can't imagine ever picking up the phone to call someone and ask if they're ok unless its my parents. That's for 14 year old girls with nothing better to do with their lives. Facebook helps me stay connected with friends whilst work are paying me to 'work'.

I've never bothered to make an account. When it first started up it seemed to be about finding people you went to school with when you were 5 and such. Got no interest in that. But I think that aspect has died down a bit now that people have been on it for years. I'm about to leave a workplace where I've got a few "work friends" who'll never become regular friends but I don't want to lose contact with either, so.... we'll see.

i did that with myspace. exchanged a few messages with a few people and that was that. i realised that i'm no longer friends with people i knew 15 years ago is that we've both changed and we drifted away from each other for a reason.

so when i started on facebook i decided not to go down that route.

this. i don't use it as a replacement for contact with my friends, more about arranging when to call or skype, or go out.

its an incredible networking tool as a musician. I can't believe so many think its a waste of time.

its not like you gotta dive in and go on farmville for 2 hours a day.

I gotta admit, I'm surprised by this showing too. I guess too, I work at a University, where this stuff is being used all the time, or being invented, so both students, teachers, employeess are tied in all the time.

You can be my friend :D

i relish the idea of my relatives, my friends, and my coworkers all interacting and following my every move.

But, they don't have to, if you don't post everything you do. And why would you? But the occassional post or a current saga of something, can be kind of fun to follow for others, or vice versa.

I have less use for Twitter personally. I'm just not that interesting or important to broadcast my every move. I see this as more your gripe not facebook.

I watched the Social Network last night. Interesting movie. Zuckerberg reminds me a lot of my 9 year old son who has Aspergers. Some very similar personality traits. I imagine that Zuckerberg probably has Aspergers. As does Bill Gates.
