I have:-

Boss DD-2. Delay of choice for general use. Robust, sounds good without being too digital.

Ibanez AD-9. Love this one when I want a darker sound. So dark and mushy in fact that it almost like a reverb in sound. I know lots of people have problems with the switch but mine has never been any bother.

Ibanez EM-5. Ultimate slapback delay. Far too flimsy for heavy use but a great delay nonetheless. Perhaps a little too specialised, I think most people would want it as a second delay.

Arion SAD-1. Makes the EM-5 look positively robust. Makes up for it in sound and price. Very nice sounding delay, not nearly as dark as the AD-9 but still very obviously analog, and it will self oscillate pretty much at will, which is nice for some noise terror.

I currently use a DanEcho (my fav for traditional echo).

Also have a Boss DSD-2 (Digital Sampler Delay) because of it's AMAZING "Trigger In" input. I have a Boss DR-110 analog drum machine going to the trigger in which causes the repeats to happen to the rhythm of the bass, snare, and accent patterns from the DR-110. It's really cool and sounds awesome and original.

Also recently tried out the Arion SAD-1 and it was a great delay pedal. Though it's not kicking off my current ones.

I'm really interested in the Reel Echo mainly because of my love for the DanEcho, I'll have to try one of those out someday.

the reel echo is terrible. sounds like a fart underwater!

the dan-echo is ok but the bypass is awful and sucks your tone, makes the straight through sound muddy.

i have a dd3 with a high pass mod. it sounds great but weaker in volume and feedback.

i had a dl4 but it digitizes your guitar signal as well as the repeats.

the em5 hates being overdriven. it's best up front in the signal chain but that wrecks the signal if you put it before a true bypass booster as it's buffered and it affects the tone even when turned off. i have 3 of these. great tone but limitations.

i have been researching this for years. you can get this or that pedal modded etc but if you're on the road and need to plug and play the only pedal worth having is the memory man.
no harsh digital signal slamming your amps, no toys cluttering your sound. the new mm is true bypass and 100% analogue.

to me there is no compromise for tone. that is the single most important aspect. money is not in the equation because once you buy the tone you've got it.
i've been playing for 32 years and had roland space echos (201, 301, 555) and just about every digital delay pedal since they were first introduced. i am a proud owner of an echoplex and a deluxe memory man. that's all i need now. they blow my skirt right up!

just passing on information. hope you find your tone.

well the first delay I played thru was a boss dm 2 ... i was grade 9 so 1981- 82.
they were way too expensive for me at the time.
By the time i could get some money the Boss DD 2 was all the rage , had to have one. I ended up with the Boss DSD 2 sampler delay just because the dd2 was not in stock. That pedal served me well thru th 80's. Used to sample the guns for AC DC's for those about to rock , we layered drums and vocal gun blast like 20 times and cranked it thru the mains, sounded good.
The last 2 years I have been using a DL-4 and honestly I just dont like the sound .
I just bought a Boss DM 2 to replace the dl4. Funny cause that is the first delay I ever tried :)

All I have is a Japanese Boss DD-3 I picked up on the cheap... it works pretty well but I really need to buy a PSA adaptor, it eats batteries in no time. works great on vocals too, my friend holds it in his hand whilst singing for some pretty wild effects.

I like to use it with a decent phaser to make soundscapes too..... But it would be so much better if the delay was analog.

A custom pedal made by Tim Kaiser - the Atomic Sonic Echo Vibe. Combination of a warm analog delay with a "grit" control and a very tweakable pitch vibrato. You can run each effect by itself or both together. Think psychedelic rockabilly!

i saw that one ebay a few months ago and nearly bought it. it sold for only like $135 USD.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Perhaps you played one with a dying battery. Short of a real Echoplex, I have yet to find something that sounds better to my ears.

What I have right now:

Line 6 DL4 - used it for about a year but I don't like the way it messes with the dry signal when it's turned on so I took it off my board and replaced it with the following:

Ibanez EM5 - replaced de DL4 for slapback and short echoes. It sounds really natural to me, and it's the one I use the most. Eventually I'll get it reboxed because the switch will die anyday.

Boss DD3 - always had a love / hate relationship with it as my main delay but I now use it for longer delays with a cleanish tone.

... by running the EM5 (set to a short delay time) into the DD-3 (set to a longer delay time) I can get very close to those "Run Like Hell"l Pink Floyd sounds.

I had:

Danelectro Dan-Echo - nice and warm but affected the tone too much when bypassed so I sold it.

Last night I got out my Kramer and plugged into a Metal Zone-->GE-7->DD-3->Phase 90 and I gotta tell ya that I've missed this 80's wanking tone. :D

The DD-3 gets a bad wrap that I don't quite understand. It's very versatile (minus tap tempo) but it's a digital pedal, not analog; therefore, one really shouldn't expect gushing analog tones. It's a keeper for me even though I'm still in search of another delay pedal for additional versatility.

There are a million Boss users, so I wonder if the raves about this pedal are simply ignorance about other options, or well informed plaudits.

i have the dm2. I got in my possession an ad-80 right now that i will play more in the coming days. I've heard it though and it's hard to say which sounded better. Th ad-80 self oscillates like crazy.

We really want to know more about the Echo Park.

I do not like the DL4 -too many volume changes and tone suchage.

The DD20 sounds good if not a bit sterill as all the boss digital delays do.

The Dan Echo sounds great but is a POS, they just die and suck tone.

I am currently using an AD99 that has great tone but no versatility.

I hope to add either a DD-20 or an Echo Park soon, but I am not sure which.

I love delay!

No, but it's worth shelling out $150 for used.

For me personally, I don't think there are many pedals out there that are worth $200.

That's a lot of green.

i think it's worth it if you don't mind the large size.

i had the chance to play the maxon ad-80 today.
Here's a brief review.
1. very compact, 1590B MXR chassis size enclosure
2. The swicth is a SPDT, but i was told it is true bypass. I can't tell from the looking at it though.
3. the is 2 output, 1 wet and 1 dry
4. quiet
5. sounds real good, similar to my dm2
6. self-oscillates

it's a good pedal. T
