Members shawnd2007
too soon to bump my question? if you bought thishttp://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00058519 Would that have everything you need? I have a lot of pedals. I see they sell the individual shelves online now ( http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50058507 ) , but not the extenders? Members LifeByTheDrop
How big is your board going to be? I bought one of the shelves you linked to (that exact one, 77cm x 31), and two posts, and all you need out of the post is to cut a piece off and attach it underneath the shelf for support. Perhaps lay your pedals out on the floor and take a quick measurement before you head to Ikea? Oh and I should have my pics up later tonight, board is finished! Members LifeByTheDrop
Okay, after some running around during errands to get the loose ends (velcro, anti-slide bottom studs, power strip liberator, and then more velcro lol), I'm done! I hope it's okay to put my little pic log of the process as I'm quite the DIY noob, maybe others will be motivated by this Here's what I started with- Saw, one 77x31cm GORM shelf, two 110cm posts, a 3-pack of medium grit sandpaper sponge, nail file, pen, several tins of screws/nails I already had, some gloves and black spraypaint from Home Depot:*This was taken after I sawed one post down so it could be the backboard and other piece the middle support (later on)Now, I think have done this part differently from others here, and rightly or wrongly so lol. The board that would go at a right angle at either end in order to raise the shelf, in other boards I've seen the person has either taken the three shelves off and realigned them so that one is at the edge, or simply bolted it on as is with a consistent gap at what will be the "top" of the board when done (as OP has done). I figured any pedals along the top, I'd just put the cables through the already existing screw holes along the top board, so I sawed out the inner edge so the board would line up right to the top with no gap, as you can see here:Next we sand down the whole thing (anyone noobish like me and hasn't done much woodworking/DIY stuff of this nature before, don't even think about skipping this!):Then of course we spray paint both sides (I waited ~1 hour in between and it was the perfect day here for it, we had some freakish 2-day period of very warm weather on the weekend hehe):Now I took the small sawed off part of the post and after measuring, sawed off enough to wind up with the middle support:And here's how it looks underneath with that middle support going on (one right angle thingy with a few screw and one screw to the shelf):
Members LifeByTheDrop
I forgot to get the thicker [better] anti-slip studs, so I had these little gel-ish clear plastic ones in the garage, I spray painted them and popped a couple onto the corner (this is likely temporary, I'd prefer the thicker ones):Here's the powerstrip with the liberator (thanks for the pointer Armchair Bronco!) going over to the Godlyke PS, also velcro'd down. To note, I bought the longest twist ties (the plastic ones w/head on top that you pull the other end through) that I could find at Home Depot, but they were still a bit short, so I just put one slightly through another to double up the length and it worked great! And here's the finished product! And yes, I know I'm not the biggest pedal collection owner (I'm also getting new cables, I know, I hate those thick Yorkville bastids too lol), but I'm just getting the board going and I think this is some pretty good "future-proofing" as the stompbox family grows Thanks again to everyone in the thread from whose pics/tidbits of info I was motivated! Members fullmetalninja
Hi there,Congratulations to the guy who started this thread and shared his knowledge! I followed his instructions and built mine. I just introduced a little mod, I added some kind of metallic shelf that I took from the same corridor where the "gorm" parts were in order to hold the switch adaptor better, anyway it is fixed with velcro as well.Hope you like it

Members HairyScaryMark
That is really cool. I've been on a slight pedal buying spree and once they arrive I'll have enough pedals to make it worth getting a pedalboard. I was thinking of getting a Pedaltrain 2. There's mixed reviews about how strong the handles of the soft case are, which has put me off slightly. Like the idea of painting my future 'Gorm' purple, but I would have to go and find a flight case and getting one made has a tendency to cost as much as buying a pedaltrain 2, so not yet decided what I'll do. Tempted to make a Gorm for the fun it of anyhow, even if I end up using a pedaltrain.

As tight as the day I mounted the pedals.

Members HairyScaryMark
Just us and old suitcase for the GORM. Find one in a thrift store or something. That solution can work but I'm hoping to get some a bit more 'professional' looking than an old suit case. It perhaps is a little bit 'future retro', turning up to a gig/rehearsal with an old suit case but personally I'd feel a bit silly. I can't find any flight cases of these dimensions elsewhere that don't cost a lot more than buying a pedaltrain. I have a friend who has been known to make his own flight cases, so I will ask him about it.
Members john l
My first DIY board and my left big toe. I made it many years ago, it was a monster with a 1 and a 1/2 rack spaces underneath for a furman power conditioner and a tube EQ unit. I was a steel framer at the time and hadnt gotten into wood working yet. Did the job for a long time then i gifted it to a friend who gigs with it to this day. Members Jero
Just use and old suitcase An old briefcase(that I found on the side of the road) has been keeping my pedals safe for a while now:thu:
Members HairyScaryMark
Never thought of a briefcase. Typically they're a bit more solid than suitcases and look a bit more 'professional'. Some shops also have a large selection of them so therefore possible to find one of an appropriate size. I still reckon to get an equivalent solution I'd end up spending as much money on the case than it would cost to get a specialist solution, such as pedaltrain. The problem is the dimensions of the Gorm unit is slighly bigger (especially in terms of width) than typical brief cases. I am not sure what exact Gorm model is used or what the dimensions are after it's been made into a pedalboard. To my eyes, the 19 5/8 x12 1/4" one looks the most similar to the one you used.http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50058507 Width: 19 5/8 " (50 cm) Depth: 12 1/4 " (31 cm) Most of the briefcases and work bag types things I've found are designed to be used with laptops. Typically the biggest are for 17" laptops and are internally around 17 3/4" (440 cm) wide. If I can find a slightly bigger case, then my purple Gorm may happen. Found this one, but it's too expensive.http://www.shopeezee.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=SE-DI-N16178P&PARTNER=FROOGLEhttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Chicago-20-Laptop-bag-by-Port-Lifetime-Warranty_W0QQitemZ120531108982QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_LaptopAccessories_LaptopCasesBags?hash=item1c1036c476#ht_636wt_1024 This price is ok-ish, but there is limited information given. This auction appears to be for the same thing at a higher price. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/20%22-Super-Wide-Chicago-BFE-Black-Laptop-bag-Carry-Case_W0QQitemZ250566975766QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&rvr_id=&cguid=b06d37a51240a0aad3a1f591ff90a7d1#ht_2866wt_1182 It lists the dimensions but doesn't state whether it is internal or external dimensions. 520 (Length) x 150 (Width) x 450 (Height) mm

Yea, a Gorm style board won't fit into my briefcase. It itself, is the pedalboard as well as the case. Not really permanent right now though, as I'm at a crossroads with how I want my pedals/boards set up.
Members The Snake King
So has anyone ever located another place where a similar "gorm" type shelving can be bought? There's no Ikea within a reasonable distance from me.
Members HairyScaryMark
If Ikea isn't possible then you could try looking for Ikea products on Ebay. I found other things at slightly inflated price before. Although inflated from Ikea price isn't that bad. You might also get an even grater bargain in some cases. Think I'll get the part next time I go to Ikea (2-3 hours away from here). It can act as a medium sized pedalboard between a larger pedaltrain one and smaller super-minimalist one, none of which I own yet but that is likely to change in the next couple of weeks.
