I don't know if that is really in scope for what they're doing or if they're just blowing smoke in a "well, who knows? It might cure cancer... let's crank it up and find out..." There is a calendar that the Mayans created that was incredibly accurate given the technology at the time. It's historical fact. A conspiracy theory, for example, is that 9/11 was planned or that the FBI took down JFK. Big difference. Were the dinosaurs a conspiracy theory too? Well, you pretty much summed up the failings of religion in the place of science. It's happened thousands of times. Just because humans weren't around to see it, doesn't mean it didn't happen.
