Members Burn
Schecter Blackjack series are very nice, so are higher-end LTDs. Ibanez also makes some very nice guitars but they are somewhat inconsistent with their pricing (a Team-J guitar might be 800$ while some not-so-well-constructed model costs 1200$). Gibson and Fender's higher-end axes can occasionally justify their price tags but I can't say the same for their budget models. In the latter case you're actually paying most of your money for the name on the headstock. The Lite Ash strat might be a big exception there, though I can't comment on that since I have never played one.
Members curseoftruth
I own a Schecter Diamond series A-5X, so I know how good they are. Very high quality stuff. But not a lot special about it either. Not talking out my ass here. I also know that they are not on the level of Gibsons lower end (except the Meolody Maker and maybe the Faded series stuff they are superior over) I know cuz I own. "You have $600, let me show you this C-1 Classic! Oh you like singlecuts, how bout the PT line!" I'd personally look at an ESP Viper 400 or that Fender TC-90 Thinline. haha - trust me, I didn't sound like a GC salesman even when I was
Members curseoftruth
Oh man, I would have definatley wanted to deal with you over most of the guys they have in these places. Even though my local GC is great, some of the others in town will sell there souls to get you into an Ibanez or Schecter. I'll take a Schecter over an Ibanez any day of the week!! Members acravero
If you are buying new, the Gibson Special SL is about $650. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/search/detail/base_pid/517279/ They are great guitars, IMO. But, again, it is a bit hit & miss with them, so be prepared to use the return policy if necessary. Bump it up to $750 and you could probably fine a used LP studio model. You could also score a really nice used Carvin for about that on e-bay. A used MIA strat might be a good option, as well.

Members sitamoia50
With $600 and an ebay account you could get some unbelievably high quality used guitars.Matter of fact every guitar in my sig was under $600 with the exception on the N4,and even that I got for a great price. They are all extremely high quality guitars. With Ebay and a little common sense you'll be all set. Members PhantomNoodler
Another vote for a lite ash strat. I've been pleased with mine looks, sound, and playability wise. If you're looking for something with a heavier sound you can get a sick schecter for $600.

Members PhantomNoodler
I you're not set against it, I'd take a hard look at used guitars. It just seems like most guitars depreciate, so why not let someone else take the hit and buy used?
Members NUNO
There are a few decent guitars for that price. I would look for an used gibson M-III (400-600 $US) or a gibson Victory (500-750 $US). Both are amasing top guitars. That price really is a joke! Members Dean Medlock
I just bought a new Fernandes Ravelle Deluxe for a $399.99 BIN off eBay. These Ravelles are very nice guitars. I'm hoping that this one will be a little lighter than my current Ravelle Korina Limited, but still have that big, fat neck.
