I really need to quit smoking. Im 27, been smoking since i was like 17, never more than a pack a day tho.... and always lights or cigars is all ive ever smoked. ........ I know i need to quit but i kinda dont want to quit and i dont really think i could. cuz all of my friends smoke and it would be way hard to still hang around them if i was trying to quit.

 

I mean i know if i continue,.....there is only one outcome really.......i mean a few get "lucky" and dont die from cancer but have to go through life looking like complete crap and stoping every 20 feet to rest when they get old.

 

So of those of you who have quit..... how did you quit?..... Gum, the patches? They make some type of pill or something dont they. Ive also heard that when you decide to quit if youll drink a ton of water for two weeks ....... like two gallons a day or something that it will help flush the nick' out of your body faster.

Since I moved back to my home town I have done nothing but sit around and smoke pot. Inhaling smoke of any sort isn't good IMO. Now that it is nice out I dusted off the old skateboard and headed down to the park.........oh god...I thought I was going to puke! For myself I usually can just flip a switch and I don't need the {censored} but nicotine seems to have a stronger hold on people. Keep busy, only smoke outdoors(smoke less when its raining or cold). I had friends just stop buying packs all together and would just either bum them or buy individuals off of people. They eventually didn't feel the need to have or want them and quit.

I quit 5 months ago...talk to your doctor about welbutrin, it's an anti depressant, but a side effect of it is it just about completely kills the urges.

I smoked for 20 YEARS and haven't really had much problems in the last 5 months. you can do it, just make up your mind to do it, talk to your doc, and DO IT! lots of lollipops helped too...good luck man!

What a bizarre coincidence, I've just recently got serious about quitting, but like a lot of other folks my friends all smoke. I've been smoking since I was 16 so that's 13 years and I think the biggest challenge for me is gigging or socialising down the pub, as both of these are activities I associate solidly with smoking.

 

The smoking ban has encouraged me a little but not much. I know I need to stop, it just seems difficult. What a ridiculous thing to have started in the first place.

 

Incidentally I just wrote on another thread about how I've always wanted a custom shop nocaster since I played one a while back. I could buy one in exactly one year with the money I burn on cigarettes....

I stopped oh...about 6-7 years ago. It was my second "real' attempt. I went "Cold Turkey". It took about a good year before I really felt a major dif' health wise. I didn't change my routine at all...didn't add anything like exercise, diet ,etc. I just stopped with the cigs. I think stopping the old cigs around 30-ish is a good idea. After that age if anything it just reeks of being an unhealthy habit.

I quit smoking cigarettes 10+ years ago. The secret to my success was that I allowed myself to smoke one really good cigar after dinner every day as a reward for not smoking any cigarettes. It really worked, and after a month or so of a daily stogie, I quit those, too. That was the easy part -- cigars are really expensive, they stink, and my wife hated them! I still enjoy a nice Monte Cristo every now and then, but my tobacco addiction is behind me.

i quit smoking 6 years ago and haven't smoked since. i quit cold turkey and it was surprisingly easy. i had tried to quit several times before and never could make it longer than a few days. this time though i actually wanted to quit, rather than feeling like i should because i was worried about the negative effects of smoking. good luck.

I had stopped smoking for a year. I used commit lozenges. I ended up smoking again. I have a bunch of excuses as to why I started back. I am serious about it now. I am also using commit again. The patch and the gum just did not help my cravings.

I don't want to get up on a pulpit, but you'll feel better, food will taste better, and you'll save enough money in a couple of months for that new guitar that you want. :)

I quit a few months back and I haven't had an urge yet.

 

I went cold turkey but the trick is to go ape {censored} before you do. Plan out a crazy {censored}ing weekend with tons of drinking and suck down as many smokes as you possibly can. By the end of the weekend, you'll be so sick of them you won't want another one. Trust me this worked for me and my friend. I can't stand the smell of them anymore.

Quit 5 years ago. Never thought it was gonna happen, as cold turkey, gum, etc., didn't dent the {censored}. I was so bad, i'd be jinky if I had to smoke another brand.

As a Christmas gift to the GF, got some patches to try to quit again. Didn't really even want to. Didn't think they were gonna even work.

Put my first one on on day one, never had a physical craving again.

{censored}ing un-believable.

 

2/Day @ $3.50/ea, call it $120/month.

Budgeted the extra $120/month for gear!

well start the "I only smoke when I drink/go out" (unless you go out every night).

 

Don't buy cigs anymore, just bum a few when your out. No smoking at all during the day. - try doing something that will make you breath heavily.. sports/running.. really feel how bad your lungs are do to smoking.

 

thats what I did, it worked for me

It will be 2 years in November for me.

I was in the same shoes as you. I was 25 at the time and had been smoking 10 years or so...

 

I worked my way down over the course of a few months. Started with a pack a day, down to 10-15 a day. Once i got down to 5, i would smoke 1/2 a cigarette, put it out, and smoke the other 1/2 later. And continued to do that even when i worked down to 1 cig. When i got down to 1 a day(1/2 in the morning, 1/2 at bedtime), it started giving me headaches and making me lightheaded(kinda like when you first start). So i stopped.

The 1st month or so smoke free, was very hard, I chewed gum and kept myself busy so I wouldn't sit around thinkin about it.

You still think about it every once in a while, but you don't crave it.

 

Oh, and I used the motivation of spending that $1000 a year I would have spent on cigarettes, buying guitars :thu:

I quit in when I was in college, so about 12 years ago. I smoked about pack a day since I was 14, so it was a good 5-7 years (I don't know, don't remember what year I quit). I quit cold turkey and it was so worth it. Haven't had a cigarette since. You have no idea how much the {censored} is killing you until you stop. The physical withdrawal only lasted a few days, after that it was just mental. The first month was a bitch, mostly mental cravings, changing habits, etc, but after that it was pretty easy. The thing is, you have to be determined to quit, if not, you'll always find an excuse to light up. If you don't want to quit, you probably won't.

I thought they put a chemical on the tobacco to keep them lit.

 

They do! How retarded is that? A burn accelerator in the tabacco and a flame retardant in the paper? :freak: I wonder the health effects of all those additives?

 

I roll my own anyway. They taste way better!
