That guard-guard?? is really unique too. Any problem with that edge and strumming? None at all, it's only slightly higher than the pickup mounting rings. I think its function is to keep the pickguard flush with the body since there are no screws on it in that area. I have seen a video on Goelsdorf (the designer) in which he was working on a screwless pickguard which was only held in place by that piece of metal.
