  1. Jack White in the White Stripes. I prefer The Raconteurs. I thought White Stripes was a duo.
  2. Lighten up on John Mayer. He's paid his dues and kicked a serious crack habit. Here's some of the crack he's done:
  3. It's the nature of human existence (at least for some people). I hate. Therefore, I am.
  4. Um No. Skinny top, heavy bottom just means the gauges vary from the standard set. 10-52 rather than 10-46. I just read the package and feel pretty stupid. I have been playing these for years and always assumed the core was tapered or something because they always felt slinkier than D'Addarios in the same gauge. Doh!
  5. Try the Ernie Balls. The 2215's are taper wound with light gauge top (fretting) and heavy gauge bottom (over the pickups). You get the dynamics of the heavier string with the playability of a lighter gauge.
  6. CyberChamp/CyberDeluxe/CyberTwin. The swiss army knife of amps and also very loud. PCB modifies the circuit to sound like the milestone amps. The AC30 circuit (not a modeling amp) in my CyberDeluxe sounds better than my Vox AD50VT's model.
  7. I've recently shipped a couple of guitars in gig bags and skinned the boxeds down to 44"x16"x6". This seems to be the best deal to ship. It fits a guitar with a gig bag pretty well. It seems like a diminishing point of return. If I opt to not buy a cheap $20 gig bag and bubble wrap the guitar like crazy, it takes a bigger box and bounces me up to an oversize. I am better off with the smaller box and throwing in the gig bag I guess.
  8. That was $71 in my box and with my packing. I went to Fedex first and it was $76.00 in my box. Interestingly, I asked Fedex how much to pack and ship and they responded they will not pack stringed instruments. In so many worrds, "You have to ship a guitar at your risk, not ours." You have to have a commercial account with a high discount to ship cheaply anymore.
  9. I thought it would go higher also. I had it on my watchlist and was thinking hard about buying it. I held off cause I'm gonna try and pick up a Gibson LP Axcess or a PRS SC245. Seriously, that was just the coolest guitar. If I hadn't bought that Les Paul Goldtop DC for $999 a while back, I would never have sold it.
  10. So now it just gets worse. I sold that Michael Dolsey thinline Tele for $399 and felt pretty good about it. I listed shipping a flat rate $45. Some guy from CA buys it and shipping for a 14# square guitar box was $67, including my 10% discount. Jeezus.
  11. I figure people are pretty mobile. No matter where you go you can access the internet. It's a down economy and I figured a lot of people would be home for the holiday. I ended my auction on Sunday around 5:00P CST.
  12. What I found funny was the number of emails I got asking if I had the tremolo bar for the Strat I was selling. That 60th Anniversary still cheeses me though. I got the same money for an Agave Blue MIM Standard and that 60th Anniv was really something special by comparison. Oh well. I've been on both sides if this buyer's market and gotten some good deals, so I shouldn't complain too loud I guess.
  13. Yeah. I hate reserve price bids so I just threw out the lowest number I would take as a min for each. I had them all in the spam thread but no bites.
  14. Man, tough crowd out there. I listed my 2006 MIM 60th Anniversary Strat (The real Blizzard Pearl model) w. 60th Gig bag with a $349 opening bid and that was all I got. That really surprised me because these are so much better than the MIM Standards and ahve a near USA Strat feel to them. I listed My Michael Dolsey Goldtop with an opening bid of $299 (my min) and that was all I got. The Michael Dolsey was an Epi Goldtop killer and I really expected to do better. My mint Michael Kelly Patriot Custom also went at my min bid at $299. Jeezus, I could have traded the last 2 in at GC and got that.
  15. Exactly. We should all know by now to look up reviews and such before jumping on anything. Spec descriptions are frequently wrong. "Dark back" means a dark mahogany stain not painted black. This is opposed to a "light back" natural mahogany finish used on some Gold tops. Go ahead and look up a review on the p90 model. Better yet, find a listing for that guitar on their website if you can. I believe they were clearing out old models with painted backs. It will be interesting to see when it was produced when I get it.
  16. I just picked my GT up at work today. It is exactly as shown on the MF website. It says "dark back" on the box, but it is in fact a solid black back and neck. Sort of like a Joe Bonamassa P90 DC LP. Now all I have to do is put black covers on the pickups and mismatch the knobs. Note to self: Get eyes checked. Mine is coming tomorrow. Hope it's mahog.
  17. I just picked my GT up at work today. It is exactly as shown on the MF website. It says "dark back" on the box, but it is in fact a solid black back and neck. Sort of like a Joe Bonamassa P90 DC LP. Now all I have to do is mismatch the knobs. WTF? I thought it was shown with a dark mahogany back and neck. If mine is black it goes back, good deal or not.
  18. While poly will not burn into the previous coats like Nitro or KTM it can be repaired. You sand the area and slightly outside of the area in need of repair with 220. Mask off the area sanded. Spray. Let dry and it is done. Done improperly and it will peel; this is why people mistakenly say it cannot be repaired. Done properly and the finish is durable. Or do I need to remind people of all the dents auto body shops repair daily and spot paint over polyurethane with polyurethane paint. Have you ever tried that? You just wind up with a larger spot and a ring around the transition between the two coats. Body shops spot paint the base coat but the always clear coat the entire panel after a repair. You can't blend polyurethane unless you are satisfied with something that looks like an obvious patch. Lacquer on the other hand melts into the original finish and can be blended.
  19. Those are some really deep gouges that needed be filled. You just didn't look it over well before painting. I use a light with a bare bulb to view. you can fill them now with automotive spot putty (red) and then spot prime with light gray or white primer. Use multiple coats of primer and wet sand between coats until it is perfect, then color coat. Build your finish and correct the imperfections with your cheap primer and save the good stuff for the color and clear coats.
  20. Sweet, especially the neck! I have the HSS version but sadly for me, no flame maple neck.
  21. It's no Epiphone, but I guess she'll do! HNG(ibson)D!
  22. I would leave the sides alone. Just sand them smooth and primer them with a white or light gray primer so the paint covers evenly. It isn't worth the fight unless your are doing a natural wood finish. Those white patches are clean wood, the rest is probably the catalyzed sealer they applied before the paint that soaked down into the wood. You'll wind up sanding 1/32" of wood off to get it to come up clean and even so forget it and paint it. I don't know why everyone is obsessed with stripping off the paint that's there unless their intent is to do a natural finish. If the paint is sound, it's the best primer in the world. Here is a Strat body I spot repaired, primered and painted ... Newbuilder bought it from me after I overhauled it. I had it filled, sanded, primed and finish painted in one afternoon. I used Duplicolor and simply wet-sanded with 1600 & 3200 grit and hand buffed it with Simonize Scratch-out. Another trick I learned is the paint the body laying flat rather than hanging up vertically. The paint flows level rather than running down the body when you lay it on. I paint the front first, let it flash for 15 minutes, grab it underneath and hold it by the trem cutout and turn it over resting on two paint can tops under the pickup routes. I then paint the back and make sure I cover the blend on the sides completely. Only a touch of overspray occurs and the blend occurs on the sides and just wet sands out. It is almost impossible to get a paint run even with heavy wet coats and the paint seems to self-level better with almost no orange peel. The last 2 thumbnails are the painted body before I wet sanded and buffed so you can see how flat and level the paint turns out this way.
