Is Foreigner and Skynard an Original Band, Cover Band or Tribute Band?

I noticed a recent show advertised and both of these bands only have 1 original member left. So my question, are they:

1) Still considered the original band

2) Would they be a cover band

3) Would they be a tribute band

Just curious what your thoughts are on this. :rawk:

Incorrect to all above...

ANSWER 4) Touring Band
:thu:

That's probably a correct answer. I get a kick out of the adds at our local casinos, which constantly feature 70's band promos with the caveat "featuring 2 original members".

1) Still considered the original band

Yes, because they are writing original music and releasing new albums.

2) Would they be a cover band

Yes, because they are mostly not people who wrote the majority of the music they play on tour.

3) Would they be a tribute band

Yes, because they go out in tribute to the band's legacy and history.

I think Foreigner sounds better now than they did in their heyday. Kelly Hansen is a really great singer, and the whole band sounds fantastic together. Lynyrd Skynyrd is weak, IMO, because Johnny has about 1/100th the charisma of his brother, and none of the other musicians are impressive (sorry). As for the spelling: Here's a tip - if you have any vowels in it (other than "y") you've spelled it wrong.

But they are riding the gravy train, for sure...

2 original members is doing pretty good for a lot of these bands! Foghat has been touring for years with just the original drummer. And then you have those old R&B groups who have a few versions running around. There's at least two groups touring as the Coasters and I'm not any of the original Coasters are even still alive, let alone working in any of those groups. There's only one original Temptation still alive (Otis Williams) and he still tours with the band. There's also a "Dennis Edwards' Temptations" touring around.

What about the new Guns N Roses? Axl only.

Yeah, I never got why he didn't just call that a solo project. Why the need to be "Guns n Roses"? He certainly has the name recognition on his own, plus he only pisses people off by not actually BEING Guns n Roses.

Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn't. In the case of Foghat or The Temptations, I don't think those bands every really broke up--I think everyone just left until there was just one original member standing, but it was a continuous flow to where they are now. In the case of Foreigner, it was always Mick Jones' band anyway and while a good case could be made that maybe he shouldn't be working as Foreigner without Lou Gramm the fact is they did record at least one album with another singer.

But seems to me there are bands where, if you pay money to see them live, you expect certain members to be a part of the act. There are a lot of bands that, even though I was somewhat curious, I went out of my way to avoid seeing simply because I didn't want to see that band without a particular member. Guns n Roses without at least both Axl and Slash would be one of them.

Yeah, those groups are the easily the lamest of the lame... apparently the old contracts were so biased against the artists (no surprise there, especially for minority groups) that they had no rights whatsoever to the band name, image, etc. so whoever DOES have the rights can roll anybody at all out there, and market them as the original group.

For awhile there was RATT and "Stephen Pearcy's RATT" both touring at the same time. I think these days Pearcy is now touring as just "Stephen Pearcy of RATT" and I don't know who is in RATT. Robbin Crosby died a long time ago, maybe Warren DeMartini is playing with them still/again?

I guess the only thing David Coverdale has going for him is that he always had a revolving line-up with Whitesnake so as long as the band can play the songs, he's still got Whitesnake.

Without him though, it would be like Nine Inch Nails without Trent Reznor... Wings without Paul McCartney... The Steve Miller Band without Steve Miller... Blondie without Debbie Harry...

I think DeMartini and Bobby Blotzer are currently officially members of Ratt although I don't know that they are doing anything as Ratt right now.

Stephen Percy rejoined a few years back. The released an album last year.

Yep. With Carlos Cavazo on guitar. But I think that right now the band is officially on "hiatus", which is industry-speak for "we released our first album of new-material in a decade last year and nobody gave a {censored}."

I remember when one of the versions of the "Coasters" came to the high school across the street when I grew up in Sacramento, my dad took me. It was probably none of the original members then, 25 years ago.

Yeah Stephen was on tour through here a few months ago solo, I didn't realize he was even back in the band. It's hard for me to care about them without Warren and Robbin - Stephen's voice is just barely tolerable to me.

Interesting fact: Warren DeMartini replaced Jake E Lee in RATT when Jake got the gig with Ozzy, I can hardly imagine Jake playing in that band.

Yeah... Whitesnake was always Coverdale's baby. Whoever could put up with him or didn't get fired was the lineup of the month. Still they sound pretty fierce these days. Got the new album a while back and it smokes!

For awhile the band was called David Coverdale's Whitesnake anyway. Is there a new new album out? I have Good To Be Bad or whatever it's called with Doug Aldrich sharing the writing duties and it's a very solid cd even though the bassist (Mendoza?) is totally buried in the mix.

I saw Foreigner last summer and was like 'wow these sound great.... who's that old dude on the corner of the stage.' You're right though Kelli Hansen does Lou Gramm better than Lou Gramm.

Ironically, my buddy, and bandmates ex-bandmate Andy is singing with Hurricane in LA replacing Hansen. Small worlds. ;)
