Can someone share the story of the HC decline?

okay, checking back, I notice the continuation of the current decline: while about 3 or 4 weeks ago

the page count was in the thousands (posts dating back till somewhere in 2005...),

now it`s a mere 250 pages (back till Dec. 7th, 2012).

yeah, well the first big exodus was in 2008 (continuing hardware/software problems), then of course there was the Jive debacle, good thing they brought back vB within 2 weeks, but a large group of people left when Lithium was rolled out, and then they made it worse with the PG-13 move (at that point I also figured it was time to leave)

Also, by then the global character of the community (we had active members from all over the world) no longer existed (at the moment, it's euro daytime, there is nearly no activity on the forums, and it has been like this for 18 months now), 41% of visitors are from USA, and about 25% visitors are from India and Pakistan (so about a quarter of visitors are spammers), Europe, Canada and Australia are all between 0-4%, UK is nearly 7%

traffic has stabilized (it's slow, but the trend is stable now)

now with the summer months coming up, perhaps the trend will take another dip

anyway, that's the way it is

for me personally, 2 things, for the first time in my many years at HC, I am wandering off into other forums, whereas I used to post only in HCFX

Overall, I get the impression that HC content is very mainstream, and no longer has all that many interesting topics, news or reviews

In fact, to stay up to date, I no longer rely on HC, I go elsewhere

In retrospect, it would have been so much better if part of the site was archived or split to keep working on the old software. I argued that after shedding members on with 2.0, it would have worked with the old software for a few months due to the reduced activity. Not only was the new software less usable, I think you had to do what it told you TWICE to reregister, and it didn't tell you that.

But who knew the community would be so fragile? It was like a raging river at one point.

The PG13 move was jaw-dropping. Anyone who thought that would build membership never looked at the original HCFX. Probably 1/3 the activity was 12 year olds cussing and posting softcore porn. Or acting like 12 year olds anyway.

Lots of people claimed to be leaving to go elsewhere, but I never figured out where that was, no site took off and really continued the mass craziness that was here.

Yeah, where did everybody go ?

there's the Old HC Gang group on Facebook

I signed up at TGP about a year ago, there were a lot of familiar folks there, but in general, boring, forgot my password by now

also been lurking OSG, TDRPI, Gearslutz, and a couple of local forums (some quite good)

for the latest news about gear, I now go to PG, Musicradar, SonicState

for the craziness, I go to Haunting Mids, originally a group that posted here but started their own forum in 2008

Things get old. The Internet evolved to be way more interesting than simply seeing yourself in print. Musicians went out of style. Money became worthless. Me personally want to play betterer. Rabble-rousing with the happening mob was never a concern and evidently becoming less of one for the former community as well.

And the Cylons are coming ....

If the email topic reply notifications would work like they should,

people that haven`t been here for a long time (for obvious reasons!),

at least would be getting the information

that something IS going on here again...

I've been trying to post here and there even though I don't want to. I've been on this forum since 2001 as mainly a lurker who just enjoys reading about new stuff and other peoples opinions and humour etc, watching peoples demos and just having a place that interests me.

But it's so bad with regards to people posting stuff lately some days I check in and there's been maybe 5 posts in the last 24 hours. That's pretty much a dead forum right there.

I've had a couple other forums die out in the past year or two that I had frequented for the prior decade.

They all had the same thing in common. They were started in the late 90's or very early 2000's and were considered the go to forums for their respective topic and the community was fun and in hindsight hit their peak around 2006, then they were purchased by big companies who changed things a bit but promised not to affect the community.

Slowly but surely these forums all died out eventually because you know these companies bought these forums with a purpose in mind aka there's money to be made if we can slyly get in there and direct these people to our basically sponsored articles and reviews and that didn't work out for them so they wondered "what's wrong maybe we should modernize our software we need all the latest features people will love that!"

When really all people wanted was a simple traditional forum in other words just the way it was already.

Look at TGP, a basic forum that doesn't try to direct you to some lame article/review. My favourite forum as far as the way it looks and runs is HFboards, a hockey forum that has a massive community and it's a simple vBulletin set-up, works great.

I'm not sure this forum ever comes back tbh. It's sad because there are obvious issues with TGP for probably most of us (snobbery, a-holes pointing out weird stuff to belittle you, too on topic though yes that's better than too off topic but still better a healthy dose of humour somewhere in there etc. )

lol giving a hot damn about cyber bullying was last decade. It's the internet. Deal with it. If you don't agree with the rules written on the door, don't go through.

Fair enough. That's the same neglectful attitude the Admins have taken. That's basically the same thing as approving that behavior. Phil's done a good job of that.

Go see my earlier post in this thread. It was a part of what made HC popular - the nut-jobs and egotists burning brightly and publicly. It wasn't the only thing, but there was a sense of freedom that having the lightest moderation possible brought: having almost none at all was what encouraged the community in the first place.

HC never will recover, because people's attitude to music, community and use of the internet have all changed. Chances are HC would have eventually fallen regardless, but probably taking a decade longer than it did being broken up like this.

I'm still here because:

TGP banned me for saying I don't like Dumble's and referring to soccer as football

Acoustic Guitar magazine's forum is full of thought police

AGF mod's are not impartial, and you are allowed to give crap to people who like brands the mods don't, but not the other way around

UG is full of kids that know they are smarter than you
