Members Sirens35
I have a budget right now to afford 2 pedals.. I cant afford a tube amp for about another 5 months, and Im using my solid state Randall halfstack (sounds like mud compared to my bandmates' beautiful Marshall JCM900) What can I do to "attempt" to sound legit with my Randall? Members soulsonic
I get good sounds with solid state amps all the time. Just gotta tweak it. Maybe a nice drive like a Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret would do it for you. What sort of sound do you want?
Members melx
I get good sounds with solid state amps all the time. Just gotta tweak it. yeah, I don't even think it's the amp... SS amps aren't usually known as 'sounding like mud' I suspect it's the guitar or more specifically the pickups that are making it sound muddy. I got a very metal guitar.. the Epiphone LP Studio with EMG 81/85s I think..I think that also has to do with it sounding so dark/muddy

Members Rikv
Maybe you could try a tube-pedal or something like this in fronthttp://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/MIC200.aspxyou can use this also for other several purposes. In the end you're best of with a real tube amp i guess. Members THAT4301
EQ pedal and a pickup change. Unless of course you like metal, in which case don't ask me because even good metal tones sound like mud to me.
Members TritoneTerror
What does "sound legit" mean, exactly? Can you be more descriptive of the sound you're trying to achieve?
Members bowlingshirt
Maybe you should get an EQ pedal...you might be able to dial out the "mud" that you mentioned, and it's something you can keep and use after you upgrade to a better amp. Members Jisatsu
Be Ty Tabor. Labratory amps are hard to find these days. Trust me I'm still looking for a decent one.

Members dramaticrunner
idk what any of these are? google is your friend.i'd recommend setting your amp totally clean, and just using pedals. IMO jcm900 is not so great sounding.
Members NetStar
I use a solid state amp and I've been complimented on my toans by guys here that don't know I'm using one.Forget about what it is for a bit and concentrate on working with what you have. EQ it and see where you go from there. Are you boosting your bass too much? If you are, you could be suffering from "flubby bass syndrome" which is easy enough to dial down. Members MegaTom
If your playing is 'legit', then you will sound 'legit' regardless of whether you use a solid state randal or an all-tube JCM 800. If muddiness is your main problem, then try putting an EQ in your amp's effects loop (or in front if you don't have a loop).

SS amps are great because you can turn it on and it sounds the same every time. my boogie combo has great tones, but it's fickle. i miss knowing what my tone will be when i power up. but i love da boogie baby. Members whiteop
sell it and get a tube amp. I was on your quest for years using a solid state amp and was never satisfied with the distortion. Get a good tube amp and the distortion you've been seeking will finally materialize. Members companyman
I second the Black Finger, I am using a Musicman RD-50 witha solid state preamp and tube power section(6L6) and the Black Finger tube compressor brings a tube response and generally enhanced tone to my sound, worth every penny!
