I don't think calling Megadeth25324 a crybaby douchebag would've got you banned. It would hurt his feelings but I doubt a banning would've happened.

Sorry, but your theory doesn't hold water. But feel free to push the conspiracy theory line if it makes you feel better.
:)

Thanks for the clarification Phil.

80% of all the reported posts and threads come from this forum and we are trying to do something about that fact.

Let me say this as clearly and concisely as I can, ahem..........You sir, are a jackass.

First of all, a correction. In the PM, I told you that the thread starter had requested the thread be closed. That is incorrect - it was actually someone else who (unlike you) was participating in the thread.

Since the thread was starting to get to the point of name calling, and since it was essentially a duplicate of another thread (linked to in the original thread), I agreed and went ahead and closed it. Note that I closed it - I didn't delete it.

In the interests of full disclosure, let's look at those PM's for a minute:

First, from you:

What is a Power Conditioner?

Phil,

Why did you lock this thread?

"What is a Power Conditioner"

Paul

And then my reply to you:

Re: What is a Power Conditioner?

Because it was spiralling towards senseless arguments, and the thread-starter asked me to.

A power conditioner is, by definition, something that conditions power. That can be pretty broad, so lots of items are marketed as such... technically, if you're running EMI and RFI filters, you're conditioning the power. A surge protector isn't conditioning power, but is a device that is designed to "blow first". So while it's supposed to protect the gear that's plugged into it, it doesn't kick in unless there's a big surge or spike and isn't in and of itself a "conditioner".

Then there's voltage regulators. Feed them a voltage anywhere within the design range (say, 90V to 140V) and they'll output a steady 115VAC. Most of these devices also include surge protection as well as EMI and RFI filtering, and tend to cost more than just surge protectors / filters.

Finally we get into uninteruptable power supplies and balanced power. Uninteruptable power supplies are regulators that constantly charge onboard batteries that will kick in in the event of a power failure - giving you time to save to disk before shutting down so you don't lose your work. Balanced power uses big transformers to isolate whatever's plugged into it from the rest of the power grid and all the noise it carries. These tend to be the most expensive - but most effective - option of all.

Phil

And your response to me:

So Phil the only real reason is that the thread starter asked you to?

You make valid points about the definitions of each device but that is irrelevant.

The heavy hand recently is way out of hand. I will post that the thread starter asked that it be locked.

Thanks.

I'm soooo happy that my explaination met with your approval.

So why the backchannel stuff? Why didn't you just drop me a PM, tell me about this thread
upfront
and ask if I could drop in and respond / explain? Seems a little backhanded to me... but whatever.

I would advise you to watch how you address the mods in the future. Someone else might not be as tolerant of the "guts" bit as I have been. Coupled with the way you handled the PM's and your posts in this thread, it seems like all you REALLY cared about and wanted to do was stir up controversy and have a reason to gripe. Feel free to gripe if you want - I'm just suggesting you watch how you do it.
:)
We try to be fair, and I've met your "challenge" and responded to you, and this thread is still open... but OTOH, I have better things to do than to have to justify every little decision I make and search for "challenges" hidden inside threads that you could have easily linked to.

"watch how you addrss the mods in the future"? What the hell is that supposed to mean? Why not just throw in an "or else"? You clowns need to get a f-ing life. You suffer God complex. Get over yourself, fool.

I also write for EQ, doing gear reviews & trade show reports (and starting in August, my own column

I'd have to talk with the accountant, but it seems to me like I have plenty of justification to write off a trip like that.

The bigger issue is having the time free to go do it.

The show is at the Knitting Factory, Bubblefoot so far is scheduled to jam with Ed there :)

What really get me rolling is when members give Craig crap, I have one of his books and a wealth of info.

So because YOU want to surf at work the rest of us are supposed to pander to your needs? Ridiculous. This has not been a problem before, people like you have made it a problem with your whining. If you are worried about the content here then don't come here. Or wait till you get home.

Oh, SNAP!

I gotta say, Phil, posting PMs or private e-mails publicly is very bad form.

I didn't 'report' it to a moderator or anything...I learned, however, pretty quick: This is the untamed WILD WEST!!!

I can tell though, this isn't so much the 'land of the moderator' as it is " THE HOME OF THE CRY BABYS"....

Wah, Wah...the mean moderators won't allow me to post my porn and trash talking...wah...wah...man, get a wahmbulance!

you may not have been the tattletale this time, but based on your comments you appear prepared to be one if you choose too. To that I say grow some f-ing balls. For the record, I don't post porn. In fact I have never posted anything close to porn. Not even a single NDN teaser photo. But I'm not gonna' come here and complain because someone else did. If it is something I don't want to see then I don't look at it.

You, OTOH, feel the need to bitch about it because you are worried your business partner might find it inappropriate. So my advice to you is GROW SOME BALLS and inform your business partner that you have no control over what is/is not posted on this site. If he don't like it you can get a new business partner or you can find some other site to surf while at work.

This place has always had it's hare of off topic posts, including the traditional friday girlie thread. Until you fools showed up. The only ones whining and crying here now is ball-less wonders such as yourself whining and crying that you can't {censored} off at work while surfing this site. Please, tell me, why is it ok to {censored} off at work while talking about guitars but not ok to fucjk off at work while looking at NDN photo's that are NOT pornographic? If this is your idea of changing the forum for the better I'd say you are failing. It is changing, but not for the better.

I see your point....this place just probably isn't for me.

There seems to be a 'good ol' boy' network of daily posters that have been coming on here for years...and like things 'the old way'...I can respect that.

But, I think the moderators want to create an environment (maybe I'm wrong here) where even a guy like me (an outsider) can come here and post within some kind of simi-decent boundaries.

I will agree that if you opened a thread that had full blown XXX in it, then that was inappropriate. I personally have NEVER,and I repeat, NEVER seen any full blown porn posted here, or even full frontal nudity. I did not see the post to which you refer.

The problem is that now even bikini pics are being pulled. Why? Because of ultra-sensitive intolerant assholes who don't like it. I'd prefer this place be like it has always been, a mix of on-topic and off-topic posts that sometimes ride the edge without crossing the line. What I definately do not want is moderators who are running around with God complexes, pulling stuff that has traditionally been tolerated because "someone" found it offensive. If that's the barometer, they should just shut the place down now, because Lord knows EVERYTHING seems to offend someone, somewhere.

So long as it isn't XXX porn, or some kind of threat, or racially offensive, then the moderators should butt out. It's worked fine for years.

I only got to read a few posts on this last page so far and am only on a short break, but I agree at least to a good degree with you:

1) People surfing HC or any other forum online at work or in any other atmosphere not totally under the observer's control should be smart enough not to click on links clearly labelled as those having ZERO to do with music gear.

---a) If someone clicks on a thread that's supposed to be a legitimate amp or guitar-related thread and then sees porn, that should be reported, though it should be mentioned that the poster probably didn't even know it was to porn, depending on what site he got it from.

2) Follow the above rule rather than click on links that you know may be offensive to you or others around you and then complain about it.

____________________________

Why do some people insist on going into threads they know they won't like and reporting it~? No offense intended to anyone new or longtimer here, but like Skidmarx said, please grow a pair and stop complaining; instead please start new threads about things you want to talk about or post in threads you're interested in. That's why there are links to begin with that have titles -- so you can ignore what doesn't interest you, personally, and click on the ones you think might work better for you.

Ah, I OWN my own company...I can hit little golf balls into shot glasses all day if I want :D ....

my point is: if someone is on a computer at work and surfin' the HC boards...whips open a thread and up pops this XXX crud....administrator checks up on his posts and gets the person fired for 'low life' activity....it is VERY possible.

There was at least one person banned temporarily that linked to a pic that somehow drew a porn pic instead, so it can be accidental; I think those come from paysites, though, but am not entirely sure.

But that can happen (and has) even when someone is trying to post a decent pic, depending on what site they link to, so it could happen on any forum and in any thread, though it's very rare.

heck, I got flamed by a coupla high school punks the other day...I didn't go complain to the mods....I 'MANNED' up...and avoided a 'flame war'...what is SSSOOOOO hard? (kinda humbling getting thumped by some kids but, so what?)

I think the moderators are only involved (largely) because too many people are COMPLAINING to them...

right. But you can't post here without worrying that your business partner might take offense? That's what you said.

I acknowledged and agreed with your point. XXX porn is not allowed and should be reported. But that's not what is happening. Now what was always tolerated and have become kind of a tradition(as in the friday girlie threads) those threads are being pulled as well. I don't like it. If it isn't porn then it should be allowed. If they are going to ban that they ought to ban ALL off topic posts. If they do this place will die. I am afraid that this si where it is heading if all it takes is a few people complaining about a thread.
