Members Raskolnikovs axe
I just got an AC30 and from what i've been reading a tube swap is in order since the stock tubes blow. Can anybody recommend what to put in there or where to buy?
Members Ron Burgandy
Have you tried it out yet? I don't know what the new CC's are shipping with, but the older ones came with decent tubes.
Members Herald of Light
The tubes "blowing" used to be literal. They don't do that anymore.
Members Raskolnikovs axe
i see...yeah i already got it in the mail and it sounds really good, but everybody in another thread i can't find anymore said get new tubes pronto - not just for tone reasons, but for reliability as well. this is a new amp - so should it have better tubes? Members utterhack
The power tubes are prolly EHX now, and those were never a problem. The preamp tubes are tung-sol or EHX now and will be fine. The tube that blows, and that you WILL want to replace pronto, is the rectifier tube. Cheap, easy to replace, and your signal doesn't care what you put there as long as it works. Since one isn't going to "sound" any different than another, all that matters is that it doesn't blow up. I've had a Mesa GZ34 in there for like a year...
Members xhavepatiencex
I put JJ's in mine, and a weber copper cap in the recto, sounds alot better to me!
Members clay_finley
How old is it?
Members Raskolnikovs axe
i just bought it as new off of ebay, but it was the floor model at a music store. from watching that store's auctions though it seems like they sell the floor models pretty regularly, so i don't imagine it's that old
Members clay_finley
The older ones had problems with reliability of the rectifier tubes. I think they've fixed most of the problems. Mine works like a tank and sounds great to boot.

Members Weathered
I'm going to spring for an NOS GZ34 for mine, simply due to the fact that NOS rectos tend to test very well, and a good one should last 10-20 years. For power tubes, the JJ EL84 is a really nice power tube (I've had mine in there for 2 years - I should get around to swapping them soon ) but EHX ones should be OK. For preamp tubes, it's just a matter of taste. I run a combo of EH and JJ in my preamp.
