Anyone else do this? I have an aversion to drastic volume disparities between songs, especially in any sort of shuffle, mix CD, etc. So I import from my CDs directly into an audio editor, then edit the waveforms so that everything in my collection is about the same overall loudness (perceived by me). I save the files on my hard drive as AIFFs but convert to AAC for iTunes. My playlist can transition from hard rock to classical piano without requiring any volume adjustments on my part.

The Sound Check feature in iTunes attempts to do this but produces uneven results, clipping, etc. Plus, using Sound Check drains the iPod battery faster. There is also the option for individual volume adjustments, but these settings are not retained when songs are burned to disc.

Maybe it's a bit obsessive, but it annoys me when I'm into a shuffle playlist and an abruptly loud remaster shatters the continuity.

Oh, here's my list:

1. Pretty Flowers Are Made for Blooming - Bill Frisell

2. Dredlocked - Los Angeles Guitar Quartet

3. Kortisin - Plaid

4. Chopin: Nocturne in E major, Op. 62, No. 2 - Ivan Moravec

5. Mary - Leo Kottke

6. Bone Digger - Medeski Martin and Wood

7. I Will (No Man's Land) - Radiohead

8. Lies - Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova

9. And So It Goes - Tommy Emmanuel

10. Answer Me My Love - Joni Mitchell

I wish I had the time and patience to do this. I've got 12,000 songs on my ipod and it would take a while to get all the volume levels adjusted. Perhaps in retirement, or better yet, maybe someone will come out with an "auto application" to do this. I recently did do the sound normalizing thing using itunes, but haven't listened to my ipod enough lately to determine if that app actually makes a noticeable difference or not....

Speaking of iPods, did you guys see the new ones introduced today: when you shake it, it reshuffles your shuffle playlist. I'm not kidding.
